Background / History

Yao Wei was already surviving alone when Lu Xi'an first saw her outside Villa No. 272. She traveled with a heavily supplied car, maintained strict precautions around strangers, and initially agreed to take Lu Xi'an along only after he traded Cold Cream and requested to be dropped at a viable survival location. Their joint defense against a hyena pack established the first basis for cooperation. 2 4

She has been shaped by long-term survival in the apocalypse. Her mother taught her not to remain constantly tense and to make life better for herself when possible; Yao Wei reveals that her mother said this before dying. 8 She later states that when she was little, her mother had already said the world had been in its apocalyptic state for so long that even its duration could not be measured clearly. 47

Yao Wei possesses a marked map and intends to visit a location in Wanquan City before searching for an oasis. Her reaction to the location is visibly hostile, but the reason for her target remains unrevealed. 14

Yao Wei is taciturn, reserved, and intensely vigilant. Early in her partnership with Lu Xi'an, she avoids revealing personal information, keeps him in the front passenger seat to prevent an ambush from behind, conceals her car's tracks, and repeatedly scouts locations before entering them. 5 6 7 Her speech is notably economical; when asked where they are going, she answers simply, “West,” and “Refuel.” 5

Her practicality extends to resources and risk. She conserves power, water, fuel, food, ammunition, and usable equipment, while favoring retreat over needless confrontation. 6 9 10 15 She can be decisive and violent when threatened, including nearly reflexively attacking Lu Xi'an when he unexpectedly grabs her arm. 19

Despite her emotional restraint, Yao Wei is capable of gratitude, attachment, and quiet consideration. While traveling west, Yao Wei and Lu Xi'an repeatedly refuel, scavenge, hunt, and avoid hostile settlements. They uncover a former underground shelter near Tan Village and turn it into a supply depot and temporary refuge. 5 15 18 20

Shelter Stay

Yao Wei helps explore and restore parts of the Shelter, using her strength to force open locked rooms. During their stay, she trains relentlessly, learns simple cooking from Lu Xi'an, and accepts his assistance during her period. 21 35 38

Road Ambush and Drone Trade

When gunmen in a pickup truck pursue them, Yao Wei and Lu Xi'an switch positions without hesitation: Lu Xi'an drives while Yao Wei shoots. She disables their vehicle and kills the surviving attackers. They later negotiate for a drone to strengthen their reconnaissance capabilities. 27 29

Fengcheng County and Luo Ping

Yao Wei and Lu Xi'an provide food and security for the injured Type B New Human Luo Ping as he fights hostile groups around Fengcheng County. Although Luo Ping invites them to join his base, Yao Wei appears relieved when Lu Xi'an declines and preserves their two-person partnership. 40 42
