Nature
The Warp is a vast, boundless non-material realm woven from magic and psychic energy rather than ordinary matter. It enables faster-than-light interstellar travel, but contains unknown numbers of hostile conscious entities and poses severe risks of corruption, disorientation, and mutation to travelers. 2
- Warp travel is effectively necessary for interstellar exploration; without it, conventional journeys can outlast a human lifetime. 2
- An unprotected traveler may spend decades lost within the Warp or be corrupted into an altered being. 2
- Psychic energy can interact directly with the Warp, creating storms, rifts, projections, and destructive effects in realspace. 14 136
- Wraithbone is crystallized Warp energy, capable of being psychically shaped into buildings, armor, and weapons. 56
Traversal and Access
| Method | Function | Risks / Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Warp travel | Allows faster-than-light movement between star systems. 2 | Exposes travelers to storms, daemons, psychic corruption, and spatial instability. 2 316 |
| Warp rifts | Tears openings between the Warp and realspace, allowing daemons, fleets, or energy to cross. 95 213 | Rifts can rapidly widen and unleash uncontrolled daemon incursions. 107 136 |
| Psychic rituals | Psykers, cultists, and sacrificial rites can contact or open paths into the Warp. 107 213 217 | Such contact can corrupt users and attract hostile entities. 16 213 |
| Webway | Serves as an alternative transit network intended to reduce dependence on Warp travel. 2 341 | Breaches can permit Warp entities to flood into its passages. 400 |
| Geller Field | Isolates a traveler from Chaos corruption during Warp entry. 316 | Does not prevent physical hazards or collisions within the Warp. 381 |
| Realspace FTL technology | Francis develops biological faster-than-light travel intended to bypass Warp dependence. 341 440 | Its vessels can still enter and violently disturb the Warp when used recklessly. 316 |
Manifestations
Warp Storms
Warp storms distort space and obstruct travel, communications, and navigation. The Gothic Sector is isolated by a colossal storm that cuts off trade and astropathic contact, while Warp turbulence becomes increasingly common during major Chaos activity. 323 324
Warp Rifts
Rifts are visible breaches between the Warp and material reality. They may be opened by rituals, psychic detonations, artifacts, or major battles, and commonly serve as entry points for daemons. 95 105 136 213
- The Molech Gate functions as an enormous rift linking reality and the Warp. 95
- Psychic shells fired into Commorragh trigger eruptions that immediately open numerous rifts. 136
- The Psi Engine's activation tears open a Warp rift over Cadia and releases Enslavers. 477
- The Blood Beacon expands into a passage comparable to a miniature Eye of Terror. 243
Daemon Incursions
Daemons use Warp breaches to enter reality, often following psychic disturbances, rituals, sacrifice, or corrupted guidance. 95 107 217
- Daemons range from lesser entities to Greater Daemons capable of devastating fleets, planets, and battlefields with psychic force. 113 515
- Daemon forms may be unstable, mutable, or incomprehensible, including bodies of eyes, tentacles, flame, disease, and shifting illusion. 107 113
- Daemons can be forcibly expelled or destroyed through anti-psychic fields, true-name rites, Blackstone technology, or complete consumption by Francis's flesh constructs. 202 382 515
Reality and Time Distortion
When the boundary between the Warp and reality weakens, ordinary physical laws become unreliable. 523
- A torn Warp barrier causes dreams, truth, lies, past, and future to intermingle. 523
- Beings passing through temporal rifts may age into skeletons or emerge after their vessels have been emptied by time. 523
- During the later galactic crisis, time ceases to be linear, space loses direction, and reality breaks into overlapping fragments. 523
Inhabitants and Connections
- The Four Chaos Gods — Khorne, Slaanesh, Nurgle, and Tzeentch exert power through the Warp and compete to claim mortals, Primarchs, and psychic resources. 95 371 500
- Daemons — Warp entities that can answer rituals, emerge through rifts, and return to or manifest from the Warp. 107 213
- Chaos cultists and sorcerers — Mortal agents who use sacrifice, psychic rites, and Chaos worship to open Warp breaches. 107 217 277
- Psykers — Their powers draw upon or connect with the Warp; excessive use can create storms, breaches, or corruption. 14 79 136
- The Emperor — Battles major Chaos entities within the Warp and later becomes central to its destabilization through his transformation into the Black Emperor. 167 496
- Francis — Exploits the Warp as an energy source, captures daemons for soul extraction, creates Warp-hunting flesh fleets, and develops systems meant to drain it. 213 341 379 524
Suppression and Exploitation
Blackstone Technology
Blackstone-based devices can suppress psychic energy and weaken daemons.
- A Blackstone Fortress device amplifies anti-psychic power, shriveling daemons and immobilizing mortals on the battlefield. 202
- The Hymn Engine suppresses Chaos and strengthens Imperial forces within its area of effect. 460 488
- Blackstone Obelisks isolate Cadia from widespread Warp distortions, making the sector a rare stable region during the temporal crisis. 523
Daemon Soul Extraction
Francis and Magnus develop a process in which summoned daemons are trapped in a rune-covered cage, tortured with Neural Whips, and converted into tangible “soul juice.” 213
- The cage prevents captured daemons from escaping or reincarnating normally. 213
- Magnus concludes that the substance could raise psychic limits and potentially produce Alpha-level psykers. 213
- The project turns the Warp's daemon population into a renewable source of psychic material, prompting fear among daemons whose summoned projections vanish permanently. 213 215
Warp-Hunting Flesh Fleets
Francis and Perturabo deploy biological warships and modified organisms into the Warp to capture daemons, cultists, and biomass. 379
- Flesh battleships generate immense Warp shadows that weaken approaching daemons. 379
- Modified insects can track, capture, and psychically project toward daemons and flesh-and-blood targets. 379
- Captured daemons are processed as fuel and components, while cultists and Chaos warriors are reduced to biomass. 379
- Daemons fear these constructs because being consumed means true death rather than banishment or return to the Warp. 382
PIS Engines
PIS Engines transform and draw upon psychic energy on a massive scale. 477 523
- The Psi Engine awakens psychic ability in ordinary people, but can also cause madness, uncontrolled power manifestation, and Warp breaches. 477
- Around Cadia, the PIS Engine calculates and folds Warp energy into a new form of power that Francis can use to perceive and rewind time. 523
- Multiple PIS Engines drain the Warp's structural foundation and psychic essence, visibly shrinking, drying, and weakening the realm and its daemons. 524
- The resulting mass psychic awakening causes humanity's souls to emerge into the Warp, driving renewed instability and Chaos contamination. 524
Major Disruptions
| Event | Chapter | Effect on the Warp |
|---|---|---|
| Horus's fall and the opening of Molech Gate | 95 | Horus becomes a vessel for the Four Gods; a massive rift opens and tens of billions of daemons march toward Molech. |
| Daemon-soul industrialization | 213 | Summoned daemons are trapped, destroyed, and rendered into tangible psychic material rather than returning normally to the Warp. |
| Francis's realspace FTL experiment | 316 | A biological warship enters the Warp under Geller-field protection and violently disturbs local gravity, daemons, and daemon worlds. |
| Proposal to drain the Warp | 341 | Francis openly presents a long-term plan to treat the Warp as an energy source and drain it through daemon extraction. |
| Francis's Warp essence awakening | 374 | Francis becomes a fragmented psychic collective whose mutated form devours daemons and shatters hostile illusions. |
| Psi Engine activation on Cadia | 477 | A psychic awakening spreads through the population, followed by madness, spontaneous psychic phenomena, and an Enslaver incursion. |
| Black Emperor's ascension | 496 | The Emperor's transformation creates a new Eye of Terror-like rift in the Solar System and sends Warp storms across the galaxy. |
| Francis's explosion in the gods' battle | 500 | The Eye of Terror changes shape as multiversal boundaries break and fragments of time and space spill outward. |
| Collapse of the Warp-reality barrier | 523 | Temporal rifts spread across the Milky Way, causing mutations, aging, alternate histories, and the breakdown of linear time. |
| PIS Engine drain | 524 | The Warp visibly contracts and weakens as its psychic essence is consumed; daemons lose much of their destructive capacity. |
