Background

Ding Yi joined the Demonic Cult during Dugu Weiwo’s peak to gain protection and use its resources to catch up with his senior brother, Fei. The cult’s sudden destruction forced him into hiding while he was still being hunted. After re-emerging decades later, he concluded that Fei had embraced God Worship: Fei’s cultivation had begun growing at an unnatural rate, and his aura had acquired the scent of burnt incense ash. 244

His conflict with Fei spans at least eighty years. Fei once broke Ding Yi’s life-bound poison and nearly severed his wrist with a blade, leaving a permanent scar. Ding Yi considers himself unable to kill his senior brother alone and fears being killed whenever they clash. 244

Ding Yi reveals himself to Zhang Chu shortly before the opening of the Sea Heart Grotto-Heaven. In exchange for an alliance against Fei, he provides intelligence on the Grotto-Heaven, God Worshippers, the Heavenly Evil Cult, and the forces gathering around the Sea Heart Grotto. Zhang Chu accepts on the condition that Ding Yi disclose everything he knows about the war that destroyed the Demonic Cult. 244

After Zhang Chu devastates the City of Extreme Evil, Ding Yi sees him survive an Evil God projection despite severe injuries. Convinced he has chosen the right ally, Ding Yi protects Zhang Chu’s recovery by arranging a sanctuary and deploying the Myriad Poison Array around the island. 248 249

Within the Qingming Secret Realm, Zhang Chu grants Ding Yi access to the Buddhist Sect’s Three Lives Body through the Martial God Decree. Moved by the gift and recognizing that his own strength has fallen behind, Ding Yi kneels and swears lifelong service to Zhang Chu. 271
