Looking at the Green Heart in his hand, Isaac sighed softly. The ritual had succeeded, but his experiment had failed.
The Goblin heart had not increased the degree of Demonization as he had expected. Instead, it had become a magical tool, one capable of storing magic power.
It was not entirely useless, but its usefulness was limited. The magic power contained within was enough for him to create three Heart Replacement Rats out of thin air at most, after which it would need to be recharged.
Better than nothing.
Isaac put away the Green Heart with a helpless sigh and turned to leave the basement. The ritual needed further adjustments. He would not abandon this experiment, at least not before achieving a measure of financial freedom.
But his store of knowledge was no longer sufficient. He needed to buy more magical knowledge...
And that required money...
"Ah..." Isaac sighed heavily again as he walked up the stairs. He would have to visit Lakeside Town again and find some work to do, completing his initial accumulation of wealth.
Of course, he could also reveal his identity as a wizard to his family early and obtain some financial support.
But Isaac dismissed that idea the moment it surfaced. For one thing, the territory was desperately short on money and could not give him much. For another, his sudden emergence as a wizard might give Second Brother some unpleasant ideas, making him think Isaac wanted to seize power. That would be troublesome.
So, at the very least, he had to wait until after the Spell Ascension Ritual before coming clean. He needed the power to protect himself first.
Besides, even if his family gave him money, it would be limited. In the end, he still had to rely on himself and become self-sufficient.
But for a wizard to make money...
Honestly, it was somewhat difficult...
He had not been idle these past few days. Besides studying spells, he had made several trips to Lakeside Town and gained a rough understanding of the Wizarding World's commercial structure. How should he put it? The wealthiest people were all those selling raw materials and semi-finished products...
Because wizards were not merely researchers; they were also producers. The stronger the wizard, the stronger their production capabilities!
Although their production efficiency was not especially high, they could make a wide variety of things.
Apart from Witches, who were born with powerful magic and spells, both Legendary Wizards and Arcanists had certain intelligence requirements. Thus, wizards were generally top students, and many followed an all-round path.
They could make many simple Potions and magical tools themselves, so there was no need to buy them.
Only high-grade items needed to be purchased, but Isaac did not even have the formulas for those...
Thus, the most commonly sold goods in Lakeside Town were all kinds of materials and semi-finished products. Extracted Demonized Flesh, for example, was one of them, and many shops and vendors purchased it regularly.
So farming was the true path!
Unfortunately, he did not have the conditions for it...
Whether it was the techniques, the seeds, or even the land, he had none of them. He simply could not start farming...
Perhaps he could change his approach.
Leaving his bedroom, Isaac pushed open the laboratory door and casually set the Green Heart on a nearby shelf. Then he walked to the bookcase and picked up a document thoughtfully.
The laboratory was no longer as empty as it had been when he first arrived. In a cage in the corner were three Demonic Rats, all experimental subjects awaiting Isaac's observation. One was a Demonic Rat whose ordinary heart had been replaced. Its condition had now improved somewhat, and its heart seemed to have begun undergoing Demonization, confirming his hypothesis. However, the degree of Demonization was probably insufficient, leaving the Demonic Rat somewhat lacking in energy.
Another had undergone Blood Replacement Modification based on that theory—namely, injecting it with higher-level Monster Blood.
Goblin blood now flowed through that Demonic Rat's body. Isaac had put considerable thought into this experiment, because simple injection was not enough. Besides resolving the rejection issue, he also had to deal with the new blood produced by the Demonic Rat.
Fortunately, his Golden Finger remained as reliable as ever. Relying on the powerful effects of Multiple Spells, he had completed the experiment. It was now in the observation stage.
The third was a puppy-sized Demonic Rat with a large bulge rising from its chest, throbbing with every beat. Isaac had replaced its heart with a Goblin heart, so the proportions were somewhat mismatched.
Of the three, the blood-replacement Demonic Rat was the most perfect. Though its enhancement speed could not compare to heart replacement, it progressed steadily and strengthened every aspect of the body. Its side effects were also far less severe than those of Heart Replacement Surgery, perhaps even...
It might have no side effects at all!
Still, the specific results required more time to observe. Isaac felt that blood replacement seemed more promising than heart replacement!
Because Heart Replacement Surgery had a limit. At most, one could replace the heart three times. By the fourth replacement, the body's rejection function would fail completely, resulting in death.
But with blood replacement, so far as he could tell, there would be no problems as long as the body digested it properly.
Besides the Rats in the corner, an opened Goblin corpse lay on Isaac's Operating Table. He had used it to verify the Goblin's bodily structure. Originally, he had planned to try performing Heart Replacement Surgery on a Goblin as well.
But when he saw the fear in the Goblin's eyes, he gave up.
Goblins were monsters, but they were also humanoid monsters and possessed a certain degree of intelligence. If Isaac had to kill Goblins, he would never hesitate, not even if they were Goblin young.
But using them for experiments...
The current Isaac did not yet have that kind of resolve...
After all, in his previous life, he had merely been a surgeon, not a mad scientist.
Several sheets of Parchment depicting Evil Magic Circles lay on the desk. They were speckled with blood Isaac had accidentally gotten on them, adding a few touches of horror to the scene.
Isaac himself, however, was used to it. After all, he had caused all of it with his own hands.
"Looks like... this is the only way..." Isaac shook his head, put down the notes in his hand, and made his decision.
He would find a Sorcerer Organization to join!
This was currently the most stable and convenient way to earn money, and it would also make acquiring magical knowledge much easier.
Sorcerer Organizations did not accept Formal Wizards, but that referred to official members. Formal Wizards could join as non-staff employees, work for the Sorcerer Organization, earn that organization's corresponding points, and exchange them for knowledge or items.
This was one of the ways most wandering wizards made a living, and it was also how Sorcerer Organizations evaluated newcomers.
So next, he needed to carefully consider which Sorcerer Organization to join. This was not something he could treat carelessly. He had to consider not only the economic benefits, but also whether it suited his own Wizardry.
After all, once he became an Archmage in the future, the Sorcerer Organization he joined would probably be this one as well.
Isaac was a man of strong initiative. Once he had made his decision, he immediately picked up the Wizard Hat beside him and put it on, then quickly headed out of the castle.
At the center of the Woodland, the Old Witch was still tirelessly stirring her cauldron. Isaac gave a slight bow in greeting, then entered the wooden house behind her and began examining the recruitment information for Sorcerer Organizations inside.
