Background / History

Iruka lost both parents in the Nine-Tails Disaster. With the village having already handled their remains, he joined Senba in reconstruction work rather than remain alone at home. Senba recognizes that Iruka, already ostracized as the class's “dead last,” is especially frightened of being left by himself after the loss. 3

He and Senba begin taking missions together after their original jonin instructor, Kurōsuke Sarutobi, is severely injured and loses both legs during the disaster. Iruka is distressed by rumors that the Uchiha Clan caused the tragedy, but explicitly refuses to blame his teammate Uchiha Yue; he instead places his trust in the Third Hokage's investigation. 4 7

Iruka's long-term goal is to become a Ninja Academy teacher like Hiruzen Sarutobi. He keeps notes on subjects such as the Three Sannin's summoning beasts so that future students will not suffer from the same lack of knowledge he feels he has. 6

Personality

Iruka is kind-hearted, conscientious, and notably free of jealousy. While Senba and Yue's abilities rapidly outpace his own, he trains separately in basic ninjutsu and is sincerely happy for their progress rather than resentful of it. 17

He is also sensitive and morally cautious. Real missions, injury, and killing unsettle him, particularly when Senba's pragmatic conduct clashes with Iruka's ideal of how a ninja should behave. Genma cautions him that holding others to his own standards may eventually separate him from Senba. 22 28

After the mission is upgraded and rewarded as B-rank, Iruka questions whether Senba's conduct truly matches the ideals they once shared. Senba argues that gaining strength and protecting his own life are also ways of protecting Konoha, leaving Iruka uncertain but more understanding. 28

Land of Rivers Operation
