| Gender | Male |
| Affiliation | Konohagakure |
| Occupation/Role | Special Jonin; former personal guard of the Fourth Hokage; Jonin sensei and field leader for Senba, Uchiha Yue, and Iruka |
| First Appearance | 16 |
Background / History
Genma formerly served as one of the Fourth Hokage's personal guards. He and two other Special Jonin were selected because each possessed faint spatial talent, giving them a remote chance of learning the Flying Thunder God Technique. Despite receiving Minato's direct guidance and notes tailored to them, none of the three mastered the technique. 39 40
After Konoha's losses in the Nine-Tails Disaster and recent war, Hiruzen Sarutobi assigned Genma to lead a new genin team. His initial curiosity stemmed from the unusual composition of the squad, which included both Senju and Uchiha members. 16
Genma's first meeting with Senba went badly: while testing the team with the Earth Release: Headhunter Technique, he was caught by Senba's Super Strength Fist and suffered a broken hand. Senba then summoned a slug to treat him, convincing Genma of his connection to the Senju and Slug summons. 19 After reporting Senba's unexpectedly broad skill set to Hiruzen, Genma accepted the permanent role of Senba and Yue's Jonin sensei. 20
Appearance
Genma is a young Konoha jonin who commonly wears a jonin vest and keeps a toothpick in his mouth. 19 20
- Carries and uses senbon in combat. 42
- Uses sealing scrolls to store mission evidence and valuables. 26
- Removes his usual senbon toothpick when formally reporting to the Hokage. 20
Personality
Genma is relaxed and outwardly indifferent, but he is an attentive teacher who adjusts his guidance to each student's needs. He recognizes that Iruka cannot keep pace with Senba and Yue's rapid growth, treating this as a concern for Iruka rather than a judgment of his worth. 20
His experience as a wartime ninja gives his advice a pragmatic edge. He stresses preparation, battlefield tools, and turning mission rewards into survival resources rather than wasting them. 23 33 45 He is also willing to entrust difficult decisions to his students, allowing Senba to take command and voice his deductions during missions. 23 41
Genma retains strong admiration for the Fourth Hokage and finds meaning in watching Konoha's younger generation grow. 21 31
Abilities & Skills
Field Leadership and Instruction
Genma trains his students through real assignments rather than shielding them from danger.
- Formally evaluates Senba as possessing combat versatility approaching that of a Special Jonin, while identifying his lack of practical experience. 20
- Entrusts Senba, Yue, and Iruka with a bandit-roundup mission and appoints Senba as field captain. 23
- Explains village politics, wartime history, mission rewards, and promotion standards to prepare his team for larger responsibilities. 21 33
- Teaches terrain use, explosive-tag placement, ninja-tool use, and other survival-oriented combat practices. 45
Senbon and Sealing Techniques
Genma is proficient with projectile weapons and sealing tools.
- Uses senbon effectively enough to leave Poison Ghost “like a porcupine” during the Ghosts' interception. 42
- Seals Tetsuzo's head as mission proof, then stores the Shin-uchi Rain Cutter and recovered valuables in a scroll. 26
- Sets traps at an affiliated-mission rendezvous point in case Uchiha Shisui is followed. 45
Earth Release: Headhunter Technique
Genma uses underground movement and ambush tactics.
- Attempted to test Senba's team from underground with the Earth Release: Headhunter Technique during their first meeting. 19
- His use of the technique was interrupted when Senba mistook him for an enemy and attacked first. 19
Body Flicker and Substitution
Genma possesses strong evasive fundamentals.
- His improved Body Flicker Technique prevented Senba's surprise strike from doing greater damage during their first encounter. 19
- Used a Substitution Technique to evade poisoned senbon during the battle against the disguised Root operatives. 46
Genjutsu Instruction
Genma teaches Senba the C-rank Fox Heart Technique.
- Causes targets to feel as though they are wandering through a confusing maze.
- Can affect multiple targets at once. 40
Spatial Talent
Genma has limited innate aptitude for space-time ninjutsu.
- Was selected as one of the Fourth Hokage's guards because of this faint talent. 39
- Could not master the Flying Thunder God Technique, even with Minato's personalized instruction. 40
- Advises Senba to seek Tobirama Senju's notes if he hopes to study the technique seriously. 40
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Senbon — his principal thrown weapon and a habitual toothpick substitute. 20 42
- Sealing scrolls — used to secure evidence, weapons, and valuables. 26
- Explosive tags — included in the battlefield preparations he teaches Senba. 45
Relationships
- Aoki Senba — Student. Genma initially underestimates him, then recognizes his exceptional ability, becomes his Jonin sensei, and gives him practical instruction in genjutsu, tactics, and survival. 19 20 40 45
- Uchiha Yue — Student. Genma guides her Fire Release and ninja-tool development and acknowledges her combat potential. 20 39
- Iruka Umino — Student. Genma is concerned that Iruka's strengths and ambitions differ from Senba and Yue's, and openly addresses the possibility that the team may eventually separate. 20 33

- Minato Namikaze — Former commander and Fourth Hokage. Genma served as one of Minato's personal guards and continues to hold him in high regard. 16 21 39
- Uchiha Shisui — Allied shinobi during the Land of Rivers affiliated mission. Genma helps prepare Shisui's rendezvous point and fights alongside him against hostile operatives. 38 45 46
- Namiashi Raidō and Iwashi — Former comrades and fellow members of the Fourth Hokage's guard group. 22 39
Story Role / Major Arcs
Formation of Senba's Team
Genma is assigned to lead a new genin squad and tests its members in person. Senba's accidental injury of Genma exposes the shortcomings of the village's intelligence report, leading Genma to reassess the boy's actual strength. 16 19 He subsequently reports to Hiruzen and becomes Senba and Yue's Jonin sensei. 20
Land of Grass Bandit Mission
Genma leads the team to Asakusa Town to pursue itinerant bandits operating along the Land of Fire–Land of Grass border. He deliberately leaves the operation to his students, making Senba captain and ordering them not to spare criminals through misplaced hesitation. 23 He monitors their deductions and later seals the mission proof and recovered assets after the operation. 24 26
Promotion Toward Chunin
Following the mission's success, Genma advocates for his team and receives a B-rank-equivalent reward from Hiruzen. He informs the team that one more B-rank mission could make them eligible to apply for Chunin promotion. 28 33
Land of Rivers Escort and Ghosts Incident
Genma leads the team on a caravan escort through the Land of Rivers, where they investigate the Ghosts and their connection to human experimentation. 36 41 During the warehouse confrontation, he intercepts Poison Ghost while allowing Senba to confront Hand Ghost because of the latter's connection to Senba's clan. 42 After Senba's bloodline tempering leaves him weakened, Genma prioritizes Iruka's injuries and refrains from pressing Senba over the wooden Hand Ghost sculpture. 43
Affiliated Mission and Shisui Rescue
Genma receives an affiliated-mission order from Uchiha Shisui and prepares a trapped rendezvous point with Senba. 38 45 When Shisui is ambushed by disguised Root operatives, Genma joins Senba and the others in the rescue battle, uses substitution to avoid poison, and releases a signal after the enemies are defeated. 46
