Background / History

Dugu Yan is the granddaughter of Poison Douluo Dugu Bo and inherits the Dugu Family’s Jade Phosphorous Serpent Martial Soul. Before Dugu Bo’s generation, the family showed no signs of self-poisoning. His modifications to its Poison Art—also its meditation method—greatly improved its effectiveness but introduced a serious flaw. Dugu Yan consequently suffered from toxins that shared her Martial Soul’s origin and gradually eroded her meridians and internal organs 32 33.

Dugu Bo sought treatment from the Ye Family when she was young, without success. Although the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Eye could suppress his own poison, Dugu Yan’s cultivation was initially too low to withstand prolonged exposure to the site. Dugu Bo therefore spent most of his time at Dugu Manor to keep her company, visiting the springs when necessary to control his condition 33 34 40.

Personality

Dugu Yan is proud, competitive, and unwilling to accept being underestimated. During her first match with Yang Yuan, his relaxed attitude makes her suspect that he is looking down on her, prompting her to fight seriously. She nevertheless admits defeat, even while remaining skeptical of his claim to complete Poison Immunity 31 32.

Her guarded manner changes markedly after Yang Yuan cures her. Classmates who had regarded her as an unapproachable “thorny rose” are surprised to see her openly chatting and laughing with him. She becomes affectionate and protective, tending to him after he exhausts himself curing Dugu Bo and interrupting questions about his unusual Seventh Soul Ring to avoid exposing him to trouble 35 41 168.

She also shows consideration and independent judgment. Before accepting the Eight-Petal Immortal Orchid, she asks whether Yang Yuan needs it himself. Later, she openly challenges Yu Xiaogang’s attempt to impose unquestioned authority on Heaven Dou Class One. Although she despises Tang San’s conduct toward Yang Yuan, she still acknowledges his natural talent 42 100 101.
