The smoke of gunpowder dissipated.
The basement was a mess. As Brother Hu, the leader of the Tiger Head Gang, groggily opened his eyes, he saw a floor covered in tiger corpses and steaming demon blood, as well as two young people standing there unharmed.
He quickly closed his eyes again.
"Stop pretending." Zhao Xing'er stepped forward and yanked him up. "I'm asking you, where is the child?"
"Whose child?" Brother Hu shrunk his neck, his face full of fear.
"Guo Yang's child." Zhao Xing'er said again.
"Who is Guo Yang?" Brother Hu scratched his head, frantically trying to recall when he had a child with someone named Guo Yang.
"Chen Dafa from the southern suburbs' factory, did you help him kidnap the son of his subordinate?" Yue Wen stepped forward and asked.
"What are you talking about?" Brother Hu immediately shouted, "I know Chen Dafa. He just asked me to send a couple of people to support him against employees coming to collect debts. There was absolutely no kidnapping involved."
Seeing his furious expression, it didn't seem like he was lying.
"Could it be..." Yue Wen and Zhao Xing'er exchanged glances, both feeling a bit awkward. "We wrongly accused them?"
"You broke in and wiped out the Tiger Head Gang because of this?" Brother Hu's eyes were filled with shock and indignation.
A moment of silence, as if a crow flew overhead.
Then, Yue Wen chuckled, "This is ridiculous."
Zhao Xing'er: "Heh."
Just then, a bronze ancient sword suddenly broke through the door and landed with a clang in the center of the basement.
Hummm--
A ripple of invisible spiritual energy spread out from the ancient sword, enveloping the entire basement. The movements of everyone in the room became extremely slow, almost frozen.
Then, a stern shout came.
"Supervision Bureau investigating! Evil spirits, surrender immediately! Resist and be killed without mercy!"
"Captain Wang—" Yue Wen's voice stretched, restricted by the formation. He shouted word by word, "The Evil Spirits have already been dealt with. Please retract your Supernatural Power—"
"Hm?"
The person outside scanned the area with his Spiritual Sense, confirmed there were no living Evil Spirits, and then retracted the formation.
The ancient sword turned into a stream of light and shot back the way it came.
Following that, a man of medium height, with a protruding belly, wearing a black Zhongshan suit, walked in. He looked about forty, with several chins on his jaw.
"Sorry I'm late." The man had an honest look when he smiled. "I was at a raid on a brothel just now. As soon as I got your call and heard what sounded like a fight with an Evil Spirit, I immediately had them pinpoint your location and rushed over."
"It's alright, it's after work hours, I'm the one disturbing you." Yue Wen quickly stepped forward and smiled politely. "Why do you have to personally handle things like raiding brothels?"
The man said, "I was the one being raided."
Yue Wen: "?"
"The Public Security Office asked for help from unfamiliar faces in our bureau to go undercover for evidence collection." The man explained. "I wasn't there by myself."
"Hahaha." Yue Wen then laughed again. "I know, Captain Wang definitely wasn't there by himself."
"Of course." The man nodded. "Not this time."
"..." Yue Wen, too lazy to banter further, turned and introduced him to Zhao Xing'er.
The man's name was Wang Shoucai, the captain of the Seventh Squad of the Satellite City Supervision Bureau, and a direct subordinate of True Person Guang.
When Yue Wen's parents encountered the spatial rift, Wang Shoucai was in charge of that case, and he followed up on the investigation. After Yue Wen woke up, he had a lot of contact with him, which is why he still had his number saved.
Then, Yue Wen briefly explained the general course of events, including the "minor friction" that had occurred at the factory earlier.
Wang Shoucai nodded understandingly. "It's not a big problem."
"The Tiger Head Gang in the southern suburbs has actually been on the Bureau's radar. Several recent homicides were suspected to be related to them. However, these Tiger Demons are very cautious, and we haven't found any evidence, nor do we have enough manpower to track them constantly. Your eliminating the Tiger Head Gang is a great contribution."
"As for that Chen Dafa... I'll look into the situation again. If he really colluded with underworld elements to harm his business rivals and workers seeking compensation, he will definitely be held accountable."
"Just try not to go too overboard next time."
As he spoke, Wang Shoucai pulled Yue Wen aside and whispered, "You know, the higher-ups have always been very tolerant towards cultivators like you who are friendly with the authorities. However, one thing is that you cannot disrupt social order in the city."
"I understand." Yue Wen nodded solemnly. "We will definitely operate under the leadership of the Supervision Bureau, uphold justice and righteousness, and maintain the prosperity and stability of Jiang City!"
"That's good." Wang Shoucai looked back, a hint of surprise in his eyes. "The strength of these few Tiger Demons is very formidable. I never imagined that you would have grown to this extent in such a short period. No wonder True Person Guang took a liking to you."
Just looking at the corpses lying on the ground, they were all powerful Tiger Demons. Moreover, the one that escaped was even stronger. Even veteran investigators from the Supervision Bureau would not find it easy to deal with such demonic creatures.
Yet, Yue Wen and Zhao Xing'er, two young people, had casually barged in and killed them. It was truly shocking.
"It was just luck." Yue Wen smiled humbly.
Wang Shoucai patted his shoulder and suddenly asked, "By the way, have there been any new developments regarding your parents recently?"
Yue Wen shook his head. "No."
Wang Shoucai gave him a meaningful look and said, "If you have any news, remember to notify us immediately."
The Supervision Bureau later sent another batch of staff to thoroughly clean up the Tiger Head Gang, arresting all the gangsters in the vicinity.
The inspection revealed that before they arrived, a group of robbers had apparently broken into the Tiger Head Gang's territory. Everything of value had been looted, and even the batteries had been dug out of the air conditioner remote controls.
Wang Shoucai lit a cigarette and stood there, chatting idly with Yue Wen and the others.
Before leaving, he added, "Oh, right. The evil cultivator you killed last time has been confirmed as a wanted member of the Flame Ghost Hall. You should receive a notification within a day or two, and then you can collect your bounty, which should be tens of thousands of yuan. This cleanup of the Tiger Head Gang should also count as you acting bravely for a just cause. We don't know how much the reward will be, but it will be paid out to you together."
"That's great," Yue Wen said, his face lighting up.
For his newly established team, money was indeed a problem.
These past few days, not counting any gains outside of their usual business, they had only earned fifteen hundred yuan from accepting commissions. Two hundred and fifty of that had to be split with Zhao Xing'er.
He really needed some extra income; even rent and utilities were becoming an issue.
"Don't get too happy just yet," Wang Shoucai warned. "Although the Flame Ghost Hall has a very loose organizational structure, the person you killed was likely a direct disciple of their hall master, Ah Hei Yan. He's a ruthless individual who never lets a grudge go. He's been operating in Tianbei Prefecture for years without being caught, so you need to be very careful."
"Ah Hei Yan?"
Yue Wen's expression turned serious. He had heard of the man's fearsome reputation; he was one of the most dangerous evil cultivators in Tianbei Prefecture.
That man in black was his disciple?
The two Tiger Demons who escaped today might also return for revenge later. When he added it all up, he had quite a few enemies to watch out for.
But there was no helping it; this was the nature of their work. If you wanted to kill more evil spirits and earn Demon Suppressing Coins, you were bound to make enemies. You couldn't expect an evil spirit to call you "brother" and then have it say, "Since you're calling me brother, what more is there to say?"
It would just be over for me.
"Thank you for the warning, Captain Wang. I'll be careful," Yue Wen said earnestly.
Although the Tiger Head Gang was completely wiped out, Guo Yang's child was still missing. Yue Wen and Zhao Xing'er couldn't bring themselves to be happy.
They still had to inform Guo Yang, so he wouldn't wait at home in vain.
So, the two of them rode their electric scooter to Guo Yang's home near the southern suburbs. It was an old building with peeling paint, looking quite dilapidated.
Yue Wen, with a serious expression, knocked on the door.
"You're here!" the one-armed man said, opening the door with a look of joy.
"Brother Guo," Yue Wen said with a heavy tone. "We went to the Tiger Head Gang today, but we still couldn't find your son. The Supervision Bureau is interrogating them, and we don't know if there will be any results later, but... the chances don't look good. However, your compensation will definitely come through. Regarding your son's situation, our agency will definitely continue to..."
"No need," Guo Yang replied, gesturing for them to come in. "My son is back."
"Huh?"
Yue Wen and Zhao Xing'er looked over. A sturdy little boy with a round face walked out from inside and shyly looked up at them.
"He just secretly snuck out to play games with some friends without telling me. What a mess. I just gave him a good scolding. I hadn't had a chance to notify you yet," Guo Yang said sheepishly. "Are you guys okay?"
Yue Wen replied, "We're fine, but the Tiger Head Gang... not so much."
The child was found, the bad guys were dealt with, and they even got five hundred yuan...
It was truly a happy ending for everyone.
Of course, the biggest gain was the eighty-three Demon Suppressing Coins he got from killing those three Tiger Demons! This was Yue Wen's biggest haul to date, enough to cover four months of debt to Big Dragon.
Guo Yang invited them in for a chat, but they politely declined with smiles. It was getting late, and after a few words, they prepared to leave.
They hadn't walked more than a few steps when they suddenly heard the child call out from behind them, "Brother! Sister!"
They turned around and saw the boy running up to them. He held two game tokens in his hand and put one into each of theirs.
"I heard Dad say you fought bad guys to find me," the boy said, looking up at them. "I don't have any money, so I'll give you these two game tokens as payment."
Yue Wen looked down at the shiny game tokens. There was no arcade name on them, only a smiling fox head. They felt quite substantial to the touch.
He put them in his pocket and smiled faintly. "Thanks, boss."
