"Detective, aren't we going to keep moving?"
Judy felt the carriage had been stopped for a long time, and Chao, sitting opposite her, remained silent, seemingly pondering a crucial question.
This afternoon, before the Detective had even shown up, Judy's heart had been pounding, as if something was about to happen. When he actually appeared and said he had found Dane's whereabouts, she could barely contain her excitement and immediately agreed to his request—to hire a private carriage and head to Golden Street in the northern part of the city around eleven at night.
Thinking back now, she realized she had been too hasty. Traveling alone with an adult male late at night, if he had malicious intentions, she would undoubtedly be in a very passive situation.
She couldn't rely on the coachman for help; after all, she had hired a carriage, not mercenaries.
Judy subconsciously reached behind her waist, where a dagger was hidden.
If he was truly after her, she would take him down with her, even if it meant dying.
"No, we'll wait here."
At this moment, the Detective suddenly spoke.
This was also the first thing he had said since getting into the carriage.
For some reason, Judy breathed a huge sigh of relief—whatever he said was better than silence. "Wait? You mean Dane is nearby?"
The Detective, however, fell into a daze again.
Damn it, why is this guy so mysterious! Judy thought irritably. Ever since she hired the Detective to find someone, she had asked several people who knew about this line of work, and none of them had ever heard of Mr. Chao. On subsequent meetings, she had even tried to follow him, wanting to see where he lived in the city, but each time she lost him halfway, disappearing as if into thin air. For example, he'd disappear after turning a corner, which she found utterly unbelievable.
Furthermore, Judy had noticed a detail: the Detective wore the exact same clothes every time she met him, as if he only owned one outfit. At the same time, he had no assistants, nor did he ever take a carriage when leaving, which could only mean one thing: the Detective was truly poor.
A poor detective meant poor performance, and poor performance meant it was difficult for him to complete client requests, let alone this particularly challenging one.
If Mr. Chao hadn't seemed so dedicated, always asking her about questions regarding Dane's belongings, she might have fired him long ago.
Judy lifted the curtain and looked outside—the street was deathly quiet. A few streetlights cast a faint glow, and looking further out, all she saw was pure darkness. The clouds were thick tonight, and even the moonlight had lost its usual brilliance, only managing to illuminate a corner of the sky.
She really couldn't guess where Dane would appear on Golden Street.
"Since he's here, why are you sitting still?"
"If you don't want to go find him, just tell me the address, and I'll go. But the commission will be halved!"
"Say something!"
After asking for a long time without a response, Judy grew anxious.
Suddenly, her eyes caught a flicker of abnormal firelight.
After a moment of surprise, Judy looked out the window again and then was astonished to discover a faint light emanating from a building at the street entrance.
That was... the Sinclair Grand Theatre?
It was almost midnight, how could there still be people in the theater?
Unless—
Judy got up, ready to jump out of the carriage.
But a hand suddenly grabbed her shoulder, pressing her back into the seat.
"Wait here, don't move," the Detective said calmly. His fingers were like iron clamps, making her unable to move.
"Dane is in the theater, right? I remember now... all those serial murders happened late at night. Was he implicated because he was investigating this? He..." Judy couldn't help but swallow, "Did he also become a victim?"
"As far as I know, not yet."
"Then I'm going to save him!"
"It's not time yet!" the Detective said coldly. "Listen carefully, I didn't call you here for no reason. You can indeed help him, but you must follow my instructions! If you act rashly now, you'll not only lose your own life but also endanger him!"
Judy trembled all over.
Even though he was just an unknown Detective, his words carried a strange sense of conviction. She stared blankly at the Detective for a long time before slowly nodding.
"Then... are we really going to save Dane just by sitting in the carriage?"
"Do you think I'm working alone?" The Detective pulled down his hat brim. "Don't worry, the rescue has already begun."
"They're here!"
As the words fell, the first man in blue crashed through the door and rushed into the corridor.
He then saw an unbelievable sight—the six rats hadn't fled in panic but were all gathered at the entrance. Not only that, but their faces didn't show much fear; instead, they bared ferocious smiles the moment they saw him!
"Suka Bule, shoot me again!" Anthony gripped his sword with both hands and swung with all his might.
Before the man in blue could raise his gun, his head was separated from his body.
"Kill!" the Russian stepped on his corpse and charged at the enemies behind him.
"Damn it, they didn't run!"
"Fall back, these people are breaking out!"
"Bayonets, prepare bayonets!"
The formation of the men in blue immediately fell into chaos. They had never expected that the rats would have the courage to bite back at this moment! In the past, when they were called into action, it was always an easy and leisurely hunt. Their opponents could only hide or beg for mercy, while they would devise various ways to kill them.
But this time, the rats showed their fangs.
Bang bang bang!
Rifles fired in succession, and blood splattered on Anthony's body. But he didn't care. After piercing the chest of the enemy in front of him, he slit the throat of a third person with another sword.
"Hahahaha... This is the hunt I've been craving!" he cackled, "Come on, all of you, attack me together!"
While Anthony drew the full attention of the blue-clothed men, Taylor and Asahara Naruko poked their heads out from the doorway and began shooting their opponents with crossbows.
Although the crossbow required manual reloading, its projectiles were as deadly as bullets. As long as one was hit, they wouldn't be able to move, and at best, it would be a massive blood loss.
"Watch out for the enemies opposite!" Zhou Zhi warned.
The blue-clothed men coming from the other side also reached the edge of the corridor, and the firepower immediately intensified.
Anthony took more than ten bullets. Even if his senses were dulled, his body could no longer support him. His last act was to grab an enemy and bite fiercely at his neck, pulling him down together.
Joe James, who had also charged out, was suppressed and forced back, his right arm broken by bullets.
"Fall back, don't get bogged down with them at the doorway anymore!" Zhang Zhiyuan shouted.
The remaining five people retreated back into the corridor, smashed open the doors of the lounge rooms, and planned to use these rooms as cover to continue blocking the pursuers.
The police captain outside also realized the situation was not as he had imagined.
His subordinates at the corridor entrance seemed to be engaged in a fierce battle with those rats. Then, they actually stopped outside the door, with guns pointed at the corridor, but few dared to enter.
"What are you all dawdling for? Why haven't you dealt with the rats yet?" he yelled at the people downstairs.
"Lord Ghost, these people... are problematic!" one subordinate replied with a troubled expression.
"What problem?"
"They don't seem to fear death!"
"What?" The police captain couldn't help but doubt his ears. "Then you can't shoot?"
The subordinate's expression worsened. "We did... but they just won't die. They took more than a dozen shots without falling and killed three of us! It's like the bullets don't even hurt them..."
"What did you say?" Ghost's expression finally changed. "You all hold the entrance, I'm coming over."
