A Day Out in the New City

The next morning, Chen Xuan woke to find only one guard left outside the compound.

"Morning," Liu Shuyue called from behind him.

She was carrying two plates.

To Chen Xuan's surprise, they held fried eggs!

"You made these?" he asked.

He distinctly remembered that Liu Shuyue couldn't cook. Back when she had been hunting monsters and demons in the Great Qi Kingdom, she had either picked up provisions at an inn or gone without food. Cultivators were hardy enough to survive ten days or two weeks without eating anyway.

Lin Qing taught me. She said cooking once in a while can be fun."

Fun? Chen Xuan smelled a conspiracy. Lin Qing clearly used Little Green to control her body whenever she did such things.

But Liu Shuyue looked so expectant that he couldn't bring himself to refuse. He sat down at the table and tried a bite of egg.

It was actually pretty good. Besides the egg's own flavor, there was salt and a little pepper.

Of course, it was hard to make fried eggs taste bad. Finding that they weren't Dark Cuisine, he felt a tiny pang of disappointment.

"How is it?" Liu Shuyue asked.

"Good. Really good." Chen Xuan ate both fried eggs.

"That's a relief." Her delighted smile left him momentarily dazed.

"Ahem... I didn't expect you to know how to use the kitchen equipment here."

"It wasn't hard. It's much like what's in the Ability Store, and if I don't understand something, I can ask Amy."

"Amy, your best smart assistant." A mechanical voice came from beneath the table.

He told Liu Shuyue what he had noticed about the guards.

She nodded. "I noticed too. They withdrew after seven, and no one's come to replace them."
