Background / History
Liu Shuyue is a disciple of the Lotus Cloud Sect, an orthodox cultivation sect based at the peak of the Kunlun Cloud Sea. Its mountain gate opens once every hundred years, dispatching six disciples to assist the six nations of the world. Liu Shuyue is one of these disciples and is formally assigned to assist Great Qi. 3 14
She has lived in the sect’s cultivation chamber from her earliest memories and denies any connection to the Yunzhou Liu family, despite the King of Qi using that family as leverage against her. 35
Before descending the mountain, Liu Shuyue became troubled by the absence of records concerning earlier disciples sent to aid the secular world. Although she could have reached Great Qi’s capital within a month, she spent nearly half a year traveling while questioning whether her predecessor had failed—and whether she would repeat that failure. 5
Her first transaction with Chen Xuan gave her Broadly Read Through the Ages in exchange for four cultivation abilities. The ability exposed her to a vast alternate history and its lessons on prosperity, decline, governance, and human nature. It strengthened her resolve to fulfill her duties rather than remain detached from worldly suffering. 4 5
Appearance
Liu Shuyue is a young woman whose composed bearing and cultivation attire lead others to recognize her as an Immortal Master. She usually favors loose, comfortable clothing, but wears practical leather and cloth travel gear when crossing the wilderness. 22 30
- Often carries a long sword. 31
- Has a distinctive osmanthus-like fragrance. 17 36
- Appears calm and unmoved amid danger, including while standing on the railing of Shajiang Bridge during the staged “Immortals” incident. 49
- Can maintain a neat appearance through water-repelling techniques even after traveling through water. 26
Personality
Liu Shuyue is frank, serious, and initially wary of Chen Xuan’s commercial manner. She dislikes being treated as a customer to be exploited, but comes to respect his reliability after discovering the true value of Broadly Read Through the Ages. 4 5
She is deeply compassionate toward ordinary people. The famine in Qingzhou changes her understanding of demon-slaying: rather than merely killing monsters, she recognizes that preventing people from being driven into monstrous acts is also part of her responsibility. 14
Liu Shuyue is principled enough to defy royal orders, yet practical enough to organize relief, negotiate rent reductions, conceal the source of relief supplies, and cultivate authority among the refugees. 19 22 29
She is curious about unfamiliar worlds and technology, though cautious around people she considers fundamentally alien to her own race and culture. 23 48

- The ability’s known drawback is increased vulnerability to fire. 10

Broadly Read Through the Ages gives Liu Shuyue access to extensive historical knowledge that reshapes her political and ethical outlook. 5
