After leaving Lin Qing to watch the shop, Chen Xuan followed Joan of Arc out of the hall. Outside lay an immaculately tended lawn, with a pristine white path of square flagstones running through its center.
He saw a churchlike building on either side of the lawn, making three in total with the one behind him. The middle building was probably the main hall Joan had mentioned, since it surpassed the other two in both size and splendor. Spirelike pillars lined either side, connected to the main building by transverse walls, like wings sprouting from the hall.
The structure neither bore weight nor provided usable space. It served no purpose beyond looking pretty. But being able to pour vast resources into such nonfunctional decoration was itself a show of strength.
"Where are we?" Chen Xuan asked curiously.
"Versailles Cathedral," Joan explained as she led the way. "It was built to commemorate our victory in the war. It's very close to Paris, so we won't have to travel all the way to Reims for celebrations and religious ceremonies anymore."
Versailles had something like this?
Chen Xuan had no recollection of it whatsoever.
"Hm? What's that?"
Three statues beside the lawn suddenly caught his eye.
One clearly depicted Joan. Her short hair, military attire, and the banner gripped in one hand were unmistakable. Another was also a woman, wrapped from head to toe in robes, with numerous small pouches hanging at her waist and a short wand in her hand.
But the third figure was bizarre.
It was a man wearing, of all things, a shirt and sweatpants. Even his shoes were walking shoes, and the sculptor had painstakingly carved their ventilation holes. His hands were spread as if loosely gripping something, and a separate stone sculpture resembling a longsword stood behind
