Background / History
Joan first arrives at the Ability Store with three armored subordinates while fleeing from the aftermath of the battle near Compiègne. Guided by what she believes to be the Lord God’s assurance, she trusts Chen Xuan enough to seek urgent medical supplies for her wounded soldiers. Though her own troops are exhausted and endangered by pursuit, she refuses to abandon severely injured men. 8 9
After Chen Xuan treats seven critically wounded soldiers with Blood Oranges, Joan recognizes the medicine as a miracle connected to her faith. When Chen exposes the trap surrounding the Compiègne operation and offers a way to reverse the situation, she displays all of her abilities and offers everything she possesses in exchange for victory. 9 10
Chen trades her the Spirit Sword Technique in exchange for Liberty Leading the People and Voice of Trust. Rather than escape the pursuing Burgundians, Joan chooses to counterattack. She rallies her soldiers with a speech, sword-light, and the Sacred Banner, transforming a demoralized retreat into a decisive victory despite being outnumbered by more than ten to one. 10 11
About three years later, Joan is imprisoned in Chinon Castle after being framed for heresy by Mad Judy, a court figure presented as a witch. Gilles de Rais seeks Chen’s help, and Chen infiltrates the castle with Liu Shuyue to rescue her. Joan’s abilities have been disabled by a curse, but the Meridian Cleansing Pill restores them. 21 23 24
Even after being freed, Joan initially intends to confront Mad Judy and accept death if it will save France. Following the clash with the witch and Chen’s advice, she chooses retirement over becoming a continuing target for political forces and future attacks. Gilles agrees to arrange her withdrawal from command. 24 26
When next seen, Joan appears around thirty years old and lives in the countryside as a shepherdess alongside the retired Gilles de Rais. She answers Chen’s follow-up invitation and again agrees to trade an ability when Liu Shuyue’s life is at stake. 33
Appearance
Joan is a young woman with short, brilliant blonde hair and emerald-green eyes. Her radiance is often tempered by exhaustion from campaigning and combat. 8
- Usually first appears in armor and a helmet; her voice is hoarse and neutral enough that her gender is difficult to identify while helmeted. 8
- While imprisoned, she wears a black burlap prisoner’s tunic, leg chains with iron balls, and a wooden yoke binding her hands. 23
- After retirement, she dresses as a country shepherdess. 33
- Her Spirit Sword Technique surrounds her hand or sword with intense white light. 10 24
Personality
Joan is deeply devout and views her mission as the salvation of France. She interprets Chen Xuan’s intervention, miraculous medicine, and abilities through the framework of divine guidance, calling him an emissary of the Lord God. 8 9 10
As a commander, she is compassionate and responsible. She insists on keeping severely wounded soldiers with the army rather than abandoning them, and even while imprisoned she worries when the guards outside her cell collapse. 9 23
Her devotion can become self-sacrificial: she is willing to die if doing so will protect France from collapse. However, she refuses Gilles de Rais’s proposal to mobilize front-line troops against the crown, judging such an action to be rebellion and a misuse of soldiers meant to fight England. 24 26
