The Choice

A cold wind swept past, making the hems of the red robes hanging on the wall sway back and forth in unison.

The brightest part of the day had passed. The sky above Baibao Street had darkened with a gloomy haze, and with no sunlight reaching in, the tailor shop felt even more cramped.

Only a pale, slender hand reached out from behind the wooden counter and rested on its edge.

Beside the hand sat a small lantern glowing red. Its vivid light made the hand look all the paler and more unreal, sending a shiver down the spine.

"Shopkeeper? Shopkeeper!"

Gao Yiling stuck her head toward the counter and called twice before a short woman finally leaned halfway out.

Weariness lingered on her face, as if she'd just woken up. When she saw so many people crowding the entrance to her shop, she first lowered her head to adjust the back of her reclining chair. Then she leaned back and rocked lazily.

"You're here."

"We are. I've brought the tourists to experience making their own clothes." Gao Yiling smiled at her amiably. "Can we come in?"

The owner of this tailor shop was quite unlike the people Yu Xing and the others had met before. She looked too tired to care about anyone and barely paid them any mind, only waving a hand. "Come in."
