They followed the Pink-clothed Nurse down to the first basement level.
The air here was damp. The arched corridor was narrow and deep, its end impossible to see. From the darkness came the sparse sounds of what seemed to be rats and cockroaches.
Several murals lined the walls, carved with crimson blood crosses. The paint around their edges had peeled away, resembling agar that was neither fully melted nor solid.
The moment Bo Shuo stepped inside, he felt something sticky beneath his feet. Looking down, he saw patches upon patches of scarlet, viscous liquid that he could not identify, enough to make anyone nauseous.
In the end, they were brought before a door bearing the Men Pai Hao: "Dean's Office."
The Pink-clothed Nurse knocked on the door and said softly, "Dean, I've brought Doctor Bo."
A refined, gentle voice came from within.
"Come in."
The door slowly opened.
Compared to the cramped darkness outside, this was where living people ought to be.
Warm, bright lighting, a clean and orderly office area, and even a sofa and television not far away.
The stark contrast with the scene outside was surprising enough, but what surprised Bo Shuo even more was the Dean's appearance.
After hearing Huang Yousheng's description of the Dean, Bo Shuo had assumed this so-called Dean would be as indescribably grotesque as the monsters outside.
That way, he could inflict powerful psychological intimidation upon the Examinees.
Yet unexpectedly, the Dean before him looked far too normal. He appeared to be in his thirties or forties, with graying temples and such an ordinary face that he seemed like the sort of person who would disappear into a crowd at once.
The only difference was that his body was excessively tall—an entire two meters.
The Dean led Bo Shuo into the adjoining reception room, personally brewed a pot of tea, and smiled as he gestured for Bo Shuo to sit.
Perhaps it was merely psychological, but he always felt that the other man's smile was exceedingly ill-intentioned.
Bo Shuo concealed his emotions and sat down directly across from the Dean without the slightest ceremony.
The Dean's mimicry was indeed excellent. Even the wrinkles at the corners of his eyes were just right. With wisps of tea steam curling through the air, he seemed all the more gentle and composed.
If Bo Shuo had not seen Huang Yousheng's severed limbs, he might truly have believed that the Dean was a "kind" monster.
Of course, "kind" was in quotation marks.
"Has Mr. Bo grown accustomed to our hospital?" The Dean began with a few pleasantries, his tone mild as he raised his wrist and slowly poured the tea into the cup.
Its color was rich and lustrous, and an intensely fragrant aroma spread from the cup.
It was clearly good tea.
Any tea connoisseur who saw it would surely treasure it, savoring it slowly and refusing to leave behind even a drop.
But Bo Shuo did not understand tea in the slightest, nor did he intend to drink it.
"I've always lived this way, so there's nothing to get used to." Bo Shuo folded his hands together, then sighed softly. "You didn't call me here just for that, did you?"
The Youth had already taken off his trench coat, and the first button of his shirt was undone, revealing his lean collarbones.
A chill shone within those pale violet eyes, clear as flawless jade. He gazed calmly at the Dean, his sense of oppression extremely strong.
His posture was utterly natural, and his matter-of-fact attitude made it seem as though he were the one leading this conversation.
Arrogant. Dominant.
The Dean narrowed his eyes. It was his first time meeting someone with such a personality, and he found it interesting. Rather than responding to Bo Shuo, he shifted his gaze to Xu Yi and Gu Baiyu, who stood by the door playing One Two Three Wooden Person, naturally changing the subject.
"And these two are?"
Bo Shuo's expression did not change. "They're cases I've been studying recently."
"Oh?" The Dean was visibly puzzled, but he still patiently asked, "What cases has Mr. Bo been studying recently? Aside from the illnesses that brought them here, do these two have other symptoms?"
As the Dean spoke, he frowned slightly and began scanning the two from head to toe, as though he wanted to see through their diseases with the naked eye.
The Dean cared immensely about medical knowledge. That was also why he regarded Bo Shuo so highly.
But the two being scrutinized did not have it so easy. The Dean's gaze upon them was icy and piercing, as though he was not looking at living people, but at study specimens.
Gu Baiyu even suspected that if Bo Shuo were not present, the Dean might directly slice them up for research.
Too terrifying.
He shuddered violently.
"That's right. Their condition is rather rare. Their brain nerves malfunction intermittently, and they easily become mad or witless when stimulated."
Bo Shuo's ability to lie with his eyes open had steadily improved. As he spoke, he gave the two of them a look.
They understood instantly.
Xu Yi pinched herself. Before she had even worked up her emotions, she heard Gu Baiyu let out an "Er!" roar.
With a sharp smack, his whole body flopped onto the floor. Then he began twisting and writhing madly, roaring and screaming as he crawled in distorted motions.
Then he suddenly clawed at his hair, every inch of him exuding a crazed aura.
His roars and screams echoed throughout the reception room.
Xu Yi: ...This didn't look like acting.
After hesitating for a while, perhaps knowing she could never imitate him, she let her pupils dilate and played the fool.
"..."
Having witnessed this scene, the Dean's doubts lessened, replaced by admiration for Bo Shuo's medical skill. "As expected of Mr. Bo. You can even detect such an illness. It seems I am the one lacking in knowledge."
