Chapter 35: Little Loli Yin
On the way back after buying her shoes, Heroine Yin's steps were light, bouncing along like a little loli.
Actually, it wasn't quite right to call her a child, because Cheng Yun often bought new shoes and didn't want to take them off, especially loving to walk around in them. What's more, Heroine Yin was an ancient person who had never experienced the feel of sneakers before in her life.
There was just one thing that bothered her—
"These shoes are too expensive! That's over a hundred bowls of beef noodles, how long will it take me to eat that much! Only people with too much money and nothing better to do would spend so much on a pair of shoes..." Every time Heroine Yin happily bounced for a while, she'd remember that she was walking on top of over a hundred bowls of beef noodles, and then start to worry. Before long, her steps would become light again.
And so it went...
After all, she remembered very clearly—the day she first arrived, she only had a pair of Roman sandals, a pair of flip-flops, plus two sets of underwear and outer clothes, totaling just over seven hundred yuan. Now, a single pair of shoes cost nearly a thousand.
Cheng Yun also felt a bit pained and quickly told Heroine Yin to be careful wearing them, lest she kick them off and break them!
Today, Cheng Yun didn't go to the sports field. Instead, he took advantage of the good weather and ran back and forth along the river for over ten kilometers.
This time, he was prepared. Before setting off, he drank some water and prepared some protein drinks and sugar water at the starting point. When he finished running, he could use them to replenish his energy.
After the run, because Cheng Yun had bought her new shoes, Heroine Yin was in a great mood and specifically granted Cheng Yun a twenty-minute break. After the rest, she still had Cheng Yun perform various movements recorded in a certain generic body-tempering technique. Each movement, in modern society, could be considered a monstrous core exercise in a top-tier fitness class, with unparalleled muscle-sculpting capabilities.
Cheng Yun found a secluded corner and followed Heroine Yin's demonstration and guidance diligently. With the boost from the mark on his vest, he didn't feel any pain. Instead, he could clearly feel his muscles releasing power and fat burning.
After the body tempering, thanks to the protein and sugar he had prepared in advance, Cheng Yun had enough energy left to walk back.
Through Heroine Yin's constant modifications to the movements while guiding him, compromising with his physical condition, he knew that he might never be able to perform every movement of this body-tempering technique completely and perfectly, no matter how he practiced. And it would never help him reach even the physical standards of an ordinary person in Songshi World. But he also understood that this body-tempering technique was very effective for him at the moment, and in the future, he could completely surpass the limits of Earth humans through other means. Even surpassing the human limits of Songshi World didn't seem so difficult.
Only halfway home, Heroine Yin spotted several Black people, which she found incredibly novel. She felt like each one of them was the same Black person from that night.
However, she wasn't a righteous person who fought against evil, nor was she a law-abiding citizen. Moreover, Cheng Yun was by her side, so she didn't do anything. She just pointed at the passing Black people with a look of surprise.
"Oh, my shoes got dirty!" Heroine Yin quickly squatted down and used her hands to wipe the dust off her new shoes.
Cheng Yun glanced at her and stopped to wait for her.
Just then, he suddenly caught sight of a tall figure on the opposite side of the road. Dark-skinned, wearing a baseball cap with the brim pulled low, and walking with a hurried gait, a stark contrast to the leisurely pedestrians around him.
"Huh?" Cheng Yun quickly called out, "Heroine, hurry up and look, isn't that the person from that night?"
"Should I not look? They all look the same to me." Heroine Yin, who had identified several suspects along the way, turned her head slightly to glance in the direction he was pointing, then withdrew her gaze and muttered, "What kind of street is this, so wide? Even with good eyesight, I can't see clearly! Besides, that person is so dark, like charcoal, there's no difference, okay?"
"I think it looks a bit like him." Cheng Yun squinted at the Black man. His observation skills were quite good, but unfortunately, he was a bit nearsighted, with astigmatism that often accompanied nearsightedness.
"Then should we chase after him and see?" Heroine Yin said, then pointed to the opposite side of the road, "It's a red light."
Cheng Yun stared intently at the figure, watching him walk further and further away with his head down, looking more and more like the person. He then glanced at the red light, hesitated, and finally shook his head, "Forget it, he's already gone so far, it's not easy to catch up."
Heroine Yin scoffed, tilting her chin slightly, "I can catch up to him in a few breaths!"
"But this is a busy area, with people coming and going. Although I don't see any road surveillance, who knows if some store's camera is pointed outside? Do you want to show everyone your superhuman speed?" Cheng Yun said, rolling his eyes at her. "Besides, what are you going to do if you catch up? Subdue him with your bare hands? Oh, a petite legal loli fighting a 1.9-meter tall Black uncle?"
"Then I..." Heroine Yin hesitated, then suddenly pulled a finger-length throwing knife from her pocket. The dull blade sent a shiver down one's spine. "I can throw a throwing knife. Let me see, from this far... it should be fine! Make a decision quickly, if he gets any further, I won't be able to throw it!"
"Throw your head!" Cheng Yun slapped her on the head. "Our society has its own rules of operation. You can't just throw a throwing knife whenever you see a suspect! What if you mistake them and hurt someone? What if your aim is off?"
"Then what?" Heroine Yin mumbled, rubbing her head, and put the throwing knife back into her pocket with a frown.
She thought, is it that troublesome? Don't they always fight and kill in the streets in movies? Transformers can fight, and there are bangs and booms, why can't she throw a throwing knife?
"There are specialized people responsible for these matters. They are professionals, and it's legal. Let them handle it." Cheng Yun was indeed lacking in strength right now, not just physically, but even mentally. He just wanted to rest properly and didn't want to bother himself with these matters.
So, after much hesitation, he took out his phone and made an emergency call. After identifying himself, he reported what he had seen. Whether they would take it seriously or not, he didn't care.
Not far ahead was a hotel. As Cheng Yun reached the hotel entrance, he suddenly stopped, as if remembering something, and turned to stare at Heroine Yin, who was carrying the shopping bag.
Heroine Yin also looked at him, stunned for a moment. "What's wrong?"
Cheng Yun tilted his head, still staring at her.
Heroine Yin quickly straightened her posture, met his gaze, and blinked her eyes, not understanding what had happened.
"I remember telling you not to bring weapons when we go out, right?" Cheng Yun stared at her pocket, pointing. "What's going on?"
"Eh? This doesn't count!" Heroine Yin quickly said.
"Are you in charge, or am I?" Cheng Yun said. "Good thing I didn't take you on the subway."
"What's a subway?"
"Don't try to change the subject!" Cheng Yun looked at her feigned innocence with a serious expression and said in a deep voice, "I've already said that people in our world can't possibly fight you. Ten people with large knives probably wouldn't even be able to hurt you, so carrying weapons is completely unnecessary in our world!"
"Who says it's unnecessary?" Heroine Yin said guiltily. "What if we run into a Transformer?"
"Hmph!" Cheng Yun was furious.
"Oh, I get it." Heroine Yin quickly nodded, then, holding her shopping bag, she scurried towards the hotel entrance.
"You're back?" Cheng Yan was still sitting at the front desk.
"Mm." Heroine Yin nodded.
"Bought new shoes?" Cheng Yan saw the shopping bag in her hand, which clearly contained a shoe box. His gaze shifted, and he saw the running shoes, then looked at Cheng Yun, who had just walked in. His expression remained calm.
"Yeah." Heroine Yin said, then suddenly frowned and looked around. "Why do I have a strange feeling? Huh, it's gone now, weird."
"Did you buy the groceries?" Cheng Yun asked as soon as he came in.
"Bought it." Cheng Yan said expressionlessly.
"Then I'll stir-fry later. You put the rice in the rice cooker to cook first, eight cups of rice to ten cups of water." Cheng Yun said as he grabbed a handful of Cheng Yan's strawberries from the coffee table and walked upstairs. "I'm covered in sweat, I'm going up to take a shower first."
"..." Cheng Yan was speechless.
Cheng Yun had grabbed so many strawberries from the plate that there weren't many left, but that was fine too. She had another reason to ask him for reimbursement.
When she turned her head, she met Heroine Yin's gaze again, so she silently picked up the plate and handed it over. "Try a few, they're quite sweet, even though Cheng Yun took almost all of them."
While Cheng Yun was eating, he noticed quite a few police cars driving by outside, some with their sirens on. He wondered if it had anything to do with that Black man. But he figured that just arresting that Black man wouldn't warrant such a large display. After all, the police weren't stupid, and that Black man probably wouldn't dare show his face if he saw this kind of commotion.
Just as he finished eating, an unfamiliar phone call came in. Cheng Yun instinctively answered it.
"Hello?" A young male voice came through.
"Hello, this is Anju Hotel."
"We are from the Criminal Police team, are you Mr. Cheng Yun?" To Cheng Yun's surprise, the caller was not a guest.
"I am."
"I'm Zhou Jiaxing, the police officer who came to your shop looking for you yesterday, do you remember?" Zhou Jiaxing paused slightly, then continued, "This afternoon you reported some information to 110, I'd like to confirm it with you again and get more details."
"No problem."
Cheng Yun honestly recounted the clothing and appearance of the Black man he and Heroine Yin had seen that afternoon, the location where they saw him, the direction of the street where he disappeared, and how confident he was that the Black man was the same one from a few days ago. Only then did Zhou Jiaxing hurriedly hang up the phone.
Cheng Yun shook his head, a sense of curiosity piqued.
Criminal police was a profession he had greatly admired since he was a child, but he had never actually been involved in the line of work his whole life. That unrealistic dream had long since vanished.
Now, he had a different dream – to be a good couch potato.
As the sky gradually darkened, to Cheng Yun's surprise, Zhou Jiaxing arrived at his shop with two unfamiliar police officers.
