Inside the base Zatanna had provided, more than a dozen mages, Shane included, sat in a circle, all staring at the old lock placed in the center of the magic circle.
Wisps of blue-green light flowed along the old lock, making seven or eight circuits before gathering at its keyhole and gradually spreading outward.
Once the blue-green lines, which should have been no larger than a palm, squeezed into the air, they twisted like visible static electricity in the dry winter weather.
They spread, spiraled, reassembled, and expanded until they formed the figure of an adult man in midair.
His name was Mental Entity, his real name Jay Young. His entire body was formed from magic that was half psychic and half spiritual power, making him look like a translucent blue-green energy being.
He belonged to the category of "irrelevant nobodies with no storyline" whom Shane had barely heard of in his previous life.
Within the Justice League Magic Division, however, he was recognized by the other mages as a master of the Psychic Dimension.
"The Psychic Dimension reinspection is complete."
The mages waited a second or two. Only after confirming that Mental Entity had no intention of keeping them in suspense did they finally breathe sighs of relief.
"Okay, then it looks like we've pretty much repaired all the holes Constantine left in the Multidimensional Defense Network."
Ragman, who had led the construction of this defense network, delivered his verdict. With a wave of his hand, two dingy gray bandages flew out and wrapped the Old Lock Core again. Mental Entity bared a mouthful of teeth glowing blue-green in a particularly unsettling grin.
"Why sell yourselves short? If it's fixed, it's fixed."
