Background / History

Orochimaru is a disciple of the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, and a former teammate of Jiraiya and Tsunade 80 204. His research focuses on bodily modification, transplantation, cloning, inherited powers, and Sage Jutsu. He worked with Danzō on experimental arms containing Senju and Uchiha powers, but their collaboration ended after Root developed its own transplantation procedures 173 290.

At the Land of Iron, Orochimaru collected commissioned ninja tools and planned to abduct blacksmith Kusayama Ichiro. Tamura Hiroshi’s group trapped and dismembered him, but he escaped by summoning Manda. The attackers captured Manda and took Orochimaru’s research and two Kusanagi Swords 107 108. Orochimaru later traded techniques and research materials with Hiroshi, including a Sage Jutsu Curse Mark method 128 173.

Nawaki’s murder—Nawaki was his student—deepened Orochimaru’s distrust of Hiruzen and Danzō 199. After Hiruzen’s removal, competing Konoha factions agreed to make Orochimaru Acting Hokage 256. He continued developing bodies and eyes, eventually cultivating a body from Mito Uzumaki’s cells and pursuing the Rinnegan 287 332.

Personality

Orochimaru treats knowledge and power as objectives worth negotiating for. He readily exchanges medical work, techniques, and biological materials for research opportunities, and Tamura regards him as intelligent enough to see through deception 173 256 278. He can abandon an unpromising research path, but remains determined to obtain the Rinnegan 321 332.

His concern for Nawaki and interest in Jiraiya’s recovery coexist with increasingly strained ties to his former teacher and teammates 199 290. He is willing to risk his own body defending Konoha, yet also secretly extracts power from Naruto and Sasuke while training them 274 362.

Abilities & Skills

Biological research and transplantation

• Modifies his own body, cultivates clones, and develops bloodline-compatible replacement limbs and eyes 80 173 256.
• Separates Wood Release factors from Hashirama-cell material to produce a vigorous transplanted arm with reduced erosion 173.
• Uses snake-based Sage Jutsu research to create a Curse Mark technique; Hiroshi later develops a version without the original’s troublesome side effects 128 485.

Sage Jutsu and Wood Release

• Uses Sage Mode and Wood Release to impede fast opponents 273.

• Uses Kagami’s Mangekyō Sharingan to manifest Susanoo; later experiments produce a stronger but imperfect fused Mangekyō 255 332.
• Develops Adamantine Sealing Chains that evolve into ten stronger, bone-white chains after his bodily transformation 290.
• As a Dark Ten-Tails Jinchūriki, uses Rinnegan abilities including Almighty Push and Chibaku Tensei, then casts Infinite Tsukuyomi and uses God Trees to draw chakra from humanity 362.

Snake techniques and survival

• Communicates and operates through small snakes, and summons Manda during his escape from the Land of Iron ambush 108 173.
