"They're nothing but a bunch of children playing house! What do they know about what real pirates are?" Golden Lion said coldly.
"That's true. At this point, Newgate is the only opponent worth mentioning on the seas. The other pirates are too weak—I can't even be bothered going to the New World," Garp agreed.
"Aren't you Marines going after Whitebeard?" Golden Lion asked.
"Not for the time being."
"Why?"
"The Marines have always primarily maintained stability in the Four Seas and the first half of the Grand Line. As long as the Great Pirates of the New World don't come to the first half of the Grand Line to stir up trouble, we won't take the initiative to look for trouble with them," Tokikake, who had remained silent until then, said.
"Heh! 'Primarily maintain stability in the Four Seas and the first half of the Grand Line,' my ass. You're afraid of Newgate's Tremor-Tremor Fruit, aren't you?"
"Newgate's Devil Fruit Ability was indeed troublesome. Back when I was responsible for pursuing Roger, Sengoku was assigned to keep an eye on Newgate.
Whenever Sengoku got close to the Whitebeard Pirates, Newgate would drive him back with the tsunamis he triggered. There was nothing he could do against the Whitebeard Pirates.
Later, Sengoku simply used human-wave tactics to wear Newgate down, making him realize that the Marines were impossible to kill off. He actually made Newgate avoid the Marines whenever he saw them, saving us quite a bit of trouble."
"Sengoku can only rely on petty tricks. If he fought Newgate head-on, Newgate would've knocked him down long ago," Golden Lion said disdainfully.
"That's true enough. Newgate really is somewhat stronger than Sengoku. If the two fought to the death for days and nights, Newgate would definitely be the one to win."
"Whitebeard Edward Newgate? Looks like your Marines never caught him!" A voice suddenly came from a cell not far from Shiki.
Garp froze for a moment before recalling who that voice belonged to.
"Patrick Redfield, it's been a long time, hasn't it?" Garp said, turning his head.
"Indeed! I haven't seen you since you sent me to Impel Down. After all these years, your mind is still as simple as ever. Garp, you really are a strange man."
"What do you mean, simple-minded? Garp is just brainless," Golden Lion thought to himself.
"Then I'd rather everyone in the world had no brains," Patrick Redfield said.
Golden Lion's face instantly darkened. "Patrick Redfield, did you use your Observation Haki to read my thoughts again?"
"Shiki, you should know that I can't control my ability to read people's hearts with Observation Haki," Patrick Redfield replied calmly.
"Damn it!"
"Hahaha! Shiki, you must be furious right now, huh? Before you were captured, you definitely would've pounced on Patrick Redfield and fought him. Too bad you're tied up now. Even if you want to, you can't."
Seeing Garp's gleeful expression, Shiki was so angry his face turned green. Tokikake beside him also burst out laughing.
"Hey—the kid beside Garp. Are you serious about what you're thinking right now?"
Mosen froze, then his expression changed drastically. Patrick Redfield had read even his inner thoughts?
"You don't need to be nervous. Your heart is purer than most people's. You're one of the good ones, and I'm very merciful to good people. I won't reveal their thoughts.
But some of your ideas are quite unusual. In all these years, this is the first time I've read thoughts this interesting, so I couldn't help asking."
Hearing that, Mosen breathed a sigh of relief. After hesitating for a moment, he said, "I don't know what you read from me, but I've always been someone who does whatever he thinks."
"Is that so? Suddenly, I'm looking forward to your future. You're more interesting than most Marines. If your mind were a little more pure, you'd be even more like those people."
Hearing that, Mosen involuntarily thought of the Rumba Pirates. He knew Lone Red was referring to the Rumba Pirates.
But the next second, Mosen regretted it. Once he thought that, Lone Red would surely read his thoughts again.
And that was indeed the case. Patrick Redfield said with some surprise, "It seems you know me quite well!"
"Just a little," Mosen said awkwardly.
"Interesting little fellow. As payment for the joy you've brought me today, I'll give you a gift."
"N-No need!"
Mosen's refusal clearly had no effect on Patrick Redfield. The next second, Mosen felt as though something had fixed its gaze on him. A chill ran down his spine, and every hair on his body stood on end.
Garp was right beside him, and Patrick Redfield was still shackled. Mosen was certain he was safe, yet he could not stop himself from growing tense, even feeling a faint trace of fear.
A layer of cold sweat unconsciously formed on Mosen's forehead. Noticing something was wrong, Garp walked over, but Mosen seemed unable to see him as his body began to tremble.
Garp frowned and asked Patrick Redfield, "What did you do to him?"
"Don't worry. I merely did him a small favor."
As soon as Patrick Redfield finished speaking, an aura flashed across Mosen's body, and he regained consciousness.
"Mosen, are you all right?" Garp quickly asked.
"Don't worry, Mr. Garp. I'm fine."
"What happened to you just now?"
"I felt like something terrifying had fixed its gaze on me. That aura was far too frightening. I felt that if I moved even slightly, I might be killed, so..."
"What you sensed just now was Conqueror's Haki mixed with my killing intent. I said I would give you a gift. That gift was helping you uncover your potential," Patrick Redfield explained.
"My potential?"
"Mr. Garp, that aura Mosen released just now..."
"It should have been Conqueror's Haki," Garp said solemnly.
"Huh? I have Conqueror's Haki?"
"With your breadth of spirit and the thoughts in your heart, there's a high chance you have Conqueror's Haki."
"What if I don't have Conqueror's Haki?" Mosen asked.
Patrick Redfield said nothing. Thinking back to what he had just felt, Mosen understood what he meant. If he did not have Conqueror's Haki, then in that situation just now, death would naturally have been his only path.
"Patrick Redfield, can your Observation Haki even tell whether someone has the potential for Conqueror's Haki?" Garp asked.
"It's impossible to determine with one hundred percent certainty whether someone possesses the qualities of a king. I merely discovered, while reading this little fellow's thoughts, that he was a very interesting person. He had his own unique views of the world as well. I believed that someone like him would most likely possess Conqueror's Haki, which was why I mixed my Conqueror's Haki with killing intent to put pressure on him. If he could break free from it, that would prove he had the qualities of a king, and awakening Conqueror's Haki would only be a matter of time. If he could not, then it meant I had misjudged him," Patrick Redfield said calmly.
"Just to test one of your guesses, you used Mosen's life as a gamble. Patrick Redfield, don't you think that's going too far?" With that, Garp slowly rose to his feet and walked toward the cell holding Patrick Redfield.
Based on the latest One Piece manga, the difference in strength between having Conqueror's Haki coating and not having it was worlds apart. Taking Roger and Whitebeard as the standard, anyone who could stand on the same level as them definitely had Conqueror's Haki and could use Conqueror's Haki coating. Otherwise, they would only be instantly defeated. Take Roger instantly defeating Kozuki Oden when he had just set sail, or Kaido instantly defeating Fourth Gear Luffy. If Garp could not use Conqueror's Haki coating, then when facing Roger, he would most likely have been instantly defeated like that as well. Sengoku's Vivre Card did not initially state that he had Conqueror's Haki; it was only added in a later update. Even Zoro's current Vivre Card does not list Conqueror's Haki. Therefore, Garp definitely has Conqueror's Haki—it simply has not been shown yet. Otherwise, how could he fight Roger?
