One step. Two steps.
The One-Eyed Demonic Wolf moved slowly, blood dripping from its body with every step.
As it drew closer, Xu Fang could even see scraps of clothing in its gaping maw, along with a nauseating, warm stench of blood.
Without hesitation, Xu Fang turned and fled, grabbing a handful of pebbles as he went.
Whenever the One-Eyed Demonic Wolf was in too much pain and wanted to snack on an Energetic Young Man to regain strength, Xu Fang would toss a pebble at it, flip it off, and successfully pull its aggro back.
The One-Eyed Demonic Wolf was furious!
Where were your manners?
Why act tough when death was staring you in the face!
The One-Eyed Demonic Wolf was beside itself with rage, trying to speed up and swallow this detestable human whole. But with bigger strides, the intensified soul-pain forced it to slow down again.
Man and wolf trudged slowly toward the city. Anyone watching would think he was walking a dog.
From afar, Xu Fang spotted a man in a Magic Association uniform.
He let out a long breath. Finally, he was safe.
Now, all he had to do was sit back and watch the show.
"Vile beast, how dare you!!!"
Xu Fang could feel a massive surge of elemental power gathering in the air, as gale-force winds swept up fallen leaves into a swirling vortex.
"Wind Disc!"
First came a suffocating heaviness, then suddenly, it was as if the air had been sucked away.
Dark clouds churned. The branches of evergreens turned into razor-sharp blades. A massive tornado lifted the One-Eyed Demonic Wolf high into the sky.
The wolf struggled desperately, but against the formless, intangible fury of the wind, all its efforts were futile.
"Raging Waves!"
Another Intermediate Magic. Surging water joined the slaughter, a magnificent and spectacular scene.
"So this is Intermediate Magic?"
Xu Fang felt his breath quicken. He widened his eyes, unwilling to miss a single detail.
Back when he read novels, he'd viewed things from a god's perspective, thinking Super-Level mages were everywhere, High-Level mages were worthless, and Intermediate-Level mages were nothing but cannon fodder.
But now that two Intermediate Magic spells were right before his eyes, their terrifying destructive power seized his mind in an instant.
So strong... I want it so badly!
"I'm Yang Zuohe from the Magic Association. Did you send up that Light Signal?" Yang Zuohe wore a dark blue shirt, and beneath his feet, a slowly fading star chart shimmered brilliantly.
Pop!
Xu Fang used the little bit of magic energy he'd just recovered to spark a small flame.
A Fire Mage?
Yang Zuohe instinctively glanced at the One-Eyed Demonic Wolf's corpse—its muzzle was a dark crimson, still glaring even after being washed by the Raging Waves.
No need to ask. That Light Mage had already fallen...
"Sorry, I came too late." Yang Zuohe sighed. "You were very brave, holding out alone against the One-Eyed Demonic Wolf for so long."
"Brave? I wouldn't dare claim that. It's a mage's duty." Xu Fang pointed back the way he came. "I could have run, but there were a few ordinary people... I couldn't just abandon them."
See? That's what you call positive energy.
Yang Zuohe's face showed undisguised admiration.
In all his years at the Magic Association, he'd met all kinds of mages. But someone like Xu Fang, who risked fighting a One-Eyed Demonic Wolf for the safety of civilians, was rare indeed!
He pulled out his phone and called a subordinate, telling them to clean up the battlefield and send the few Energetic Young Men, who were babbling nonsense from fright, back home.
Everything proceeded in an orderly fashion.
"This corpse belongs to you. How do you want to handle it?" Yang Zuohe was decent enough not to try and claim the spoils.
"If it's convenient, send it to the Hunter's Alliance for me." Xu Fang smiled. "The reason I came here was because I took a mission to eliminate a Giant-Eyed Stinky Rat. I need something to turn in."
"Giant-Eyed Stinky Rat?"
Yang Zuohe frowned. "That's ridiculous! The Hunter's Alliance is really slipping. How did such a huge oversight happen? Don't worry, I'll handle it for you. You'll get every bit of compensation you're owed. Also, on behalf of the Magic Association, I'll issue you a commendation, and the reward will be delivered to you soon."
"Thank you, Mr. Yang."
Yang Zuohe didn't stay long. He had many matters to attend to.
A vicious creature like the One-Eyed Demonic Wolf appearing in a residential area was nothing to take lightly!
The One-Eyed Demonic Wolf incident finally settled down. Thanks to his record of going toe-to-toe with the wolf, Xu Fang successfully applied for the title of Junior Hunter, earning worshipful looks from the front desk young lady.
From now on, he wouldn't need to file reports before heading into the wild.
For the rest of winter break, he didn't take on any more missions. The battle with the One-Eyed Demonic Wolf had fully exposed his shallow foundation.
No matter how big the cheat he had, at his core he was still a Primary Level One Mage. He had only recently grasped Release Magic, and after a few skills his mana pool hit rock bottom.
He had come out unscathed this time, partly due to luck. What about next time?
So, Xu Fang devoted his entire holiday to meditation, slowly filling up his Spiritual Power and mana through hard training.
No matter what you do, time flies when you're fully focused.
Soon, it was the start of the school year again.
Xu Fang put on his School Uniform and stepped through the school gates, ready to welcome the new semester.
The classroom was buzzing with chatter, students cheerfully bragging and showing off their magic progress.
"Not to brag or hate, but I'm close to controlling seven Star Seeds."
"No way, how many have you got?"
"Two."
"Get lost! A scrub with two dares to show off in front of a big shot like me with three?"
"No way, no way, is there still someone who hasn't even controlled four Star Seeds? The genius is me!?"
"Heh!" Mu Bai sneered, shaking his head as if he couldn't be bothered to speak.
As his chief lackey, Zhao Kun San immediately jumped in to fire a blanket insult: "I'm laughing, you guys actually have the nerve to show off with those few Star Seeds?"
The people around him instantly took offense.
We deserve to be mocked by others, but by you?
Someone immediately shot back: "Oh my, Third Brother, just because your face is big doesn't mean you can be shameless. Tell us, how many Star Seeds have you controlled?"
"How many I have doesn't matter." Zhao Kun San said proudly, "Our Mu Bai has already controlled five Star Seeds, five! Next semester he'll easily form a Star Track and release Elementary Magic!"
"Holy crap, what a beast!"
"This gap is really hopeless."
"Mu Bai, the great, are you still taking disciples? Teach me how to control Star Seeds!"
"I thought Xu Zhao Ting from the next class was already unmatched in the whole school, but Mu Bai is even fiercer than him!"
Hearing the classmates' discussion, Mu Bai was floating on air.
Zhao Kun San, though he looked old and dumb and often acted like a useless teammate, Mu Bai would give him full marks when it came to coordinating a flex.
After all, he, Mu Bai, was a proper member of the Mu family. He had to maintain the style and refinement of the upper class. He couldn't just jump out when others said "two" or "three" and yell "a bunch of noobs, I've got five," that would be too cheap and didn't match his image as a refined gentleman.
See how good it was now? With Zhao Kun San around, Mu Bai's flex was perfectly executed and satisfying.
"Green Tea Man!"
Mo Fan lay on the desk, feeling annoyed.
Controlling Star Seeds was nothing; being able to release magic was what really counted. Unfortunately, he couldn't let anyone know about his Lightning Element, so he could only watch Mu Bai show off in front of everyone...
So frustrating!
