Background
Kaido and Big Mom were once members of the Rocks Pirates. Afterward, Kaido established himself as captain of the Beasts Pirates and occupied Wano Country, whose terrain made it easy to defend and difficult to invade 215 482.
Before becoming an Emperor, he repeatedly challenged major powers alone, including Marine Headquarters and the Whitebeard Pirates. Although defeated and captured, he escaped. The World Government also held him for experimentation at some point; the circumstances and timing are not specified 276 479.
During the Beasts Pirates’ rise, Kaido and Big Mom challenged Whitebeard in a ten-day battle that destroyed three islands. Both eventually withdrew because continuing risked mutual destruction and would benefit newcomers to the New World. Their cooperation remained limited by mutual distrust 143.
Appearance
Kaido has an extremely tall, burly human form resembling a small giant, with long black hair falling over his shoulders and two dragon-like horns 277 278.
- Build: His enormous weight makes a pirate ship sink several inches when he sits down 280.
- Weapon: Usually carries a massive spiked club 277.
- Dragon form: An azure dragon with a serpent’s body, boar-like head, deer antlers, bull ears, ram whiskers, hawk claws, and fish scales 279.
- Presence: His openly aggressive aura is compared to an erupting volcano 319.
Personality
Kaido places strength above age, reputation, and hierarchy. The Beasts Pirates are held together by his overwhelming power, and he welcomes formidable recruits. He treats the Red Earl with unusual patience and offers him the vice-captain position despite the crew’s surprise 328.
Alcohol makes him volatile. His drunken anger at Morito’s recognition as an Emperor leads him to attack Dressrosa, while his own subordinates fear being killed by a casual blow. Once sober, however, he recognizes unfavorable situations and postpones fights that would interfere with his affairs in Wano 277 280.
His brutality does not exclude calculation. He accepts Morito’s alliance partly because he receives artificial Zoan fruits upfront and expects no penalty if the proposed war fails to materialize. He also refuses to enter Morito’s spatial passage without reassurance, recognizing that an ally’s unexplained ability can still be dangerous 453.
Kaido finds the world boring and seeks a war large enough to overturn it. Making the Navy and World Government suffer is a particular pleasure. He prefers direct brawls, dislikes Kizaru’s evasive fighting style, and regards deaths among insufficiently strong pirates as unremarkable 319 320 451 452.
Abilities & Skills
Awakened Zoan Physiology
Kaido is an awakened Zoan Devil Fruit user. His exact fruit name is not supplied, but its abilities include dragon transformation, exceptional stamina, durability, and rapid physical regeneration 279 332 333.
- Recovery: Serious physical injuries from Morito’s Silver Wheel Reincarnation Explosion heal rapidly 280.
- Endurance: He outlasts the newly empowered Red Earl when the latter cannot replenish himself with blood 333.
- Limits: His regeneration cannot readily repair soul injuries. Big Mom’s Soul-Soul Fruit is needed to mend the damage inflicted by Morito 280 282.
- Suppressed healing: Uranus wounds his calf with an Exorcism effect that prevents healing; Morito restores it with Time Origin 483.
Dragon Transformation and Flight
Kaido can become a giant blue dragon and travel rapidly through the air, accompanied by thunderclouds and storms 279 319 322.
- Long-distance travel: Flies from the New World to Morris Island to pursue the Vampire Fruit 319.
- Aerial survival: Can escape sea-level disasters by taking flight, though this does not protect his entire fleet 474 475.
- Heat Breath: Charges and releases scorching energy from his mouth; the charging process sharply raises the surrounding temperature 279 450.
- Heat Breath vulnerability: Morito’s Hand of Heaven forces the attack back into his mouth and clamps his jaws shut, causing an internal explosion 280.
Physical Strength and Club Combat
Kaido combines enormous physical force with speed disproportionate to his size. His casual grab creates a sonic boom, and his club strikes can smash Pica’s giant stone warrior 277 319.
- Thunder Bagua: A high-speed, lightning-wreathed club attack. It knocks Crocodile unconscious with one blow, crushing his ribs despite Armament Haki protection 319.
- Close combat: Fights Sengoku and Garp directly while also enduring Kizaru’s attacks and Aokiji’s interference 321.
- Strength comparison: Morito considers Kaido superior to himself in pure physical strength during their confrontation with Imu 482.
- Limits: Four coordinated Navy powerhouses suppress him at Morris Island; Imu, wielding Uranus, can overpower his strikes 321 482.
Haki
| Type | Demonstrated use |
|---|---|
| Armament Haki | Grabs Kizaru’s ankle despite his Logia nature; reinforces his own defenses 320 332. |
| Observation Haki | Detects and blocks Kizaru’s surprise light-speed kick while distracted by the Vampire Fruit 320. |
| Conqueror’s Haki | Clashes with Shanks’s Haki, producing lightning and a gale that throws nearby pirates away 473. |
- Aura is not always Haki: The pressure produced by Kaido and the Red Earl’s meeting makes weaker pirates collapse, but King identifies it as their combined aura rather than Conqueror’s Haki 328.
- Defensive trade-off: Kaido recognizes that full-body Armament coverage disperses its strength, weakening concentrated offense and defense 495.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Spiked club / kanabo — His primary weapon for close combat and Thunder Bagua 277 319.
- Sake flask or gourd — Carried at his waist; he offers his gourd to the Red Earl when proposing recruitment 328 452.

- Broken red umbrella handle — Given to him by the Red Earl as a token of future cooperation 333.

- Charlotte Linlin / Big Mom — Former Rocks crewmate, territorial rival, healer, and intermittent ally. Healing his soul leaves him owing her a favor; they later unite against Morito 282 482 505.
- Red Earl — Powerful recruitment target. Kaido helps him obtain the Vampire Fruit, then fights him over the proposed vice-captain position; they settle on future cooperation instead 322 328 333.
- Doflamingo / Joker — Artificial Devil Fruit trading partner whom Kaido pressures for results. Kaido also overwhelms his family while searching for Morito in Dressrosa 277 400.
- King — Senior subordinate whose strength and composure stand out. Big Mom’s refusal to return him later strains her alliance with Kaido 328 496.
- Queen — Trusted subordinate and one of the Beasts Pirates’ Calamities 169.
- Jack — Subordinate willing to attack even Marine Headquarters if Kaido orders it; leads the Beasts Pirates’ advance force in Alabasta 328 411 412.
- Whitebeard — Established rival whom Kaido repeatedly challenges. News of Whitebeard’s defeat by Morito enrages him 143 276 400.
- Shanks / Red-Haired — Opponent whose strength forces Kaido to reconsider his view of the Shichibukai; their direct clash establishes Shanks as his peer 473.
- Imu — Enemy during the Holy Land assault. Uranus allows Imu to repel Kaido and Big Mom and inflict wounds that resist regeneration 482 483.
- Sugar — Receives Kaido and Big Mom after their transformation into toys 507.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Four Emperors and the Dressrosa Attack
Kaido resents being placed on equal footing with Morito in the new Four Emperors order. Drunk, he reaches Dressrosa looking for him and devastates the Royal Highlands despite the Donquixote Family’s resistance 276 277.
Their first meeting ends badly for Kaido. Morito repels his club, sends him flying with Silver Wheel Reincarnation Explosion, and turns his Heat Breath against him. Kaido commandeers a passing pirate ship and heads to Cakes Island for help with his lingering soul injury 278 279 280.
Big Mom heals him and uses the opportunity to study Morito’s soul-damaging power. Kaido acknowledges the resulting debt and remains to hear her proposed countermeasure 281 282.
Vampire Fruit and the Red Earl
Kaido arrives on Morris Island to seize the Mythical Zoan Vampire Fruit for his army. After taking it from Crocodile, he becomes the focus of Sengoku, Garp, Kizaru, and Aokiji’s coordinated assault 319 320 321.
The Red Earl obtains and eats the fruit during the confrontation. Kaido helps him by sending Kizaru away with his club, then departs with an invitation for a later meeting 321 322.
On Onigashima, the Red Earl refuses to become vice-captain unless Kaido defeats him. Kaido initially gains the endurance advantage, but the Red Earl restores himself by draining a Beasts Pirate. With thousands of potential blood sources nearby, Kaido accepts an agreement for future cooperation rather than securing his recruitment 328 333.
Artificial Zoans and the Holy Land Alliance
Following Whitebeard’s defeat, Kaido prioritizes artificial Devil Fruit production as the next step toward his ambitions. Morito later visits Wano with improved fruits and offers a supply deal tied to a coming war 400 450 451.
Morito advertises an 80% success rate, although he privately inflates the actual figure from 70%. Kaido accepts the bargain and agrees to attack Mary Geoise while the Navy is occupied with Whitebeard at Marineford 450 452 453.
Kaido and Big Mom initially stall against Shanks, hoping Morito’s crew will bear the first burden of the assault. Morito intervenes and forces the operation forward 473 474.
In the Holy Land, Kaido enthusiastically attacks the Five Elders, tearing off one opponent’s arm. He then fights Imu alongside Big Mom and Morito, but Uranus defeats his usual advantage in strength and regeneration. He is left shocked when Imu dies and the weapon disappears 479 480 482 483 493.
Raftel and Final Defeat
After the Holy Land campaign, Kaido declares his alliance with Morito finished. He and Big Mom subsequently form a separate alliance to eliminate Morito and compete for Roger’s treasure 496 505 506.
Kaido cautiously tests the route to Raftel by sending a disguised subordinate ahead with the fleet. Once safe arrival is confirmed, he follows through Morito’s Black Hole and recognizes the island as the vanished Giant Kingdom 507.
Kaido and Big Mom attempt to attack Morito, but he defeats them using Sugar’s Hobby Hobby Fruit ability and a curse seal. Both become toys entrusted to Sugar, and their erased “existence” brings their Emperor status to an end 507.
