Chapter 11: Giant Invasion

"Why does wanting to see the outside world mean I have to face everyone's cold stares?"

Eren Yeager fumed with resentment. "More than that, what's the point of living like livestock penned up inside these walls?"

Whether it was the people who had lived peacefully within the walls for a hundred years sneering at the Survey Corps, even openly expressing disgust, or his own mother's disapproval of him joining the Survey Corps, it all left young Eren choking with pent-up anger.

With a rebellious streak, Eren ran out of the house, and Mikasa, at his mother's request, followed behind him.

Eventually, the two of them, along with Armin Arlert—another close childhood friend—ended up by the riverbank, sulking like children in their "secret base."

"That can't be helped. Peace has lasted a hundred years, and the Survey Corps' expeditions outside the walls have yielded no results or contributions. They've only attracted more giants to roam outside Wall Maria. To most people, that's just making things worse."

Unlike the single-minded Eren, Armin had a sharper mind and could understand why the Survey Corps was despised by those living within the walls.

"Besides, the Royal Government's policy forbids discussing anything about the outside world. Being interested in it has become taboo."

"So what? Our lives should be ours to decide." Eren wasn't just defying his parents—he was even sulking against the Royal Government's dominant policies.

This youthful will for freedom perhaps shouldn't be underestimated.

Eren and Armin kept grumbling, while Mikasa watched the two hotheads coldly. She had no interest in talk about inside or outside the walls. Living safely was all that mattered. For Mikasa Ackerman, who had nearly died at the hands of bandits as a child before being taken in by the Yeager family, the meaning of life was both small and heavy.

"People who blindly believe life inside the walls is safe might be wrong too. Even if the walls haven't been breached in a hundred years, that doesn't mean today will be the same."

Armin understood better than Eren why people were content to stay inside the walls, but despite knowing that rationally, his curiosity and thirst for knowledge about the outside world still put him on the same side as Eren.

—Someday, I really have to go see the outside world.

"Yeah." Eren nodded in deep agreement. Everyone else inside the walls was too numb.

Just as Mikasa was about to scold them for their nonsense, a shockwave swept through the entire Shiganshina District. Leaves swirled and flew, and then the ground itself began to tremble.

Like a bolt from the blue, a colossal giant, its body crimson and wreathed in steaming white mist, appeared atop Wall Maria.

Then Wall Maria collapsed with a thunderous roar. The Colossal Giant kicked open a massive hole, as if confirming Armin's earlier words.

Not that Armin had jinxed it or set up some kind of flag. There was no such thing as an eternal "Wall of Sighs" that could forever repel giant invasions. It was just that people accustomed to false peace never dared to imagine the walls being shattered by giants.

And then, this nightmare no one dared to face truly descended.

The people of Shiganshina District fled in panic toward the second wall. Armin snapped out of his shock at the astonishing catastrophe. "We need to hurry too..."

But Eren didn't run like Armin did. His home was in a different location from Armin's—across the river, on the edge of the town near Wall Maria.

His mother was in the direction where Wall Maria had been breached!

For a moment, Eren stood frozen, taking two or three steps toward Wall Maria. Then, realizing the danger, his face turned pale as he sprinted toward the direction from which the giants were flooding in. His mother was at home, and the chaos caused by Wall Maria's collapse would likely reach there.

Sure enough, before the rubble of a house toppled by the tremors, Eren saw his mother pinned beneath several fallen beams.
