"Kid, can you handle this?" After learning of the Great Toad Sage's prophecy, Jiraiya had promised to train Yamanaka Tohru.
Yamanaka Tohru had never imagined that Jiraiya's idea of training would be making him do endless push-ups with a stone from Mount Myōboku on his back.
Tohru had never done such intense training before. At first, he couldn't manage more than 200 push-ups. Even children in the world of Naruto who hadn't yet entered the Ninja Academy performed better than he did—not to mention the children of the great clans, who began training their bodies at the age of three.
Yamanaka Tohru's clan had always specialized in mental strength. Its members focused on training their secret techniques, and they barely had enough time to learn ninjutsu, let alone train their bodies.
Tohru's own ninjutsu mostly focused on speed. Even his Lightning Release Chakra Mode was meant to boost his Lightning Body Flicker and let him use Chidori for an instant kill.
The Rasengan he learned later was an unsealed ninjutsu, so it could also be formed quickly and used instantly.
As for Ice Release, aside from Ice Seal and controlling ice, its greatest strength was allowing him to teleport without expending energy through ice containing his Chakra—or, more accurately, Nature Energy.
Before, Tohru couldn't tell the difference between Nature Energy, physical energy, and mental energy. He had always assumed that the energy he sensed in the ice was his own Chakra.
With his experience, Jiraiya easily spotted Tohru's weakness. What Tohru needed most now was to train his body and improve his physical fitness.
As for ninjutsu, Jiraiya could teach him Water Release and Wind Style Ninjutsu later. Improving Tohru's physical fitness, however, couldn't wait.
"Come on, kid, get moving!" Jiraiya lounged on the grass, keeping an eye on Tohru as he ran. To improve Tohru's physical fitness, Jiraiya often returned to Konoha to buy all sorts of nutritious food.
More than half a year passed. Under Jiraiya's supervision, Tohru's physical fitness improved tremendously. The most obvious result was an increase in his Chakra reserves.
Tohru's Chakra reserves had finally reached the level of an average Jonin. In the original story, twelve-year-old Naruto had a hundred times as much Chakra as Kakashi. Now Tohru had finally reached one percent of what Naruto had at twelve.
In Year 41 of Konoha, after spending more than half a year training his body on Mount Myōboku, Tohru began learning Water Release Ninjutsu under Jiraiya's guidance.
So far, Tohru knew three Water Release techniques: Water Release: Water Ripple, Water Release: Water Wall, and Water Release: Water Dragon Bullet. His mother, Yamanaka Seiko, had taught him all three.
As one of the Three Legendary Sannin, Jiraiya had no shortage of ninjutsu. He had no idea how many techniques he'd collected on the battlefield.
"Kid, has anyone ever explained the nature transformation of Water Release to you?"
"No. I learned all my Water Release Ninjutsu from my mother."
"I see. Then tell me, kid, what do you think is water's most important characteristic for attacking?"
"Probably its ability to change shape, its impact force, and its pressure," Tohru replied after thinking for a moment.
"Then what forms can water take?" Jiraiya asked.
Jiraiya's question couldn't stump a modern man. Even elementary school students knew that water had three states: solid, liquid, and gas.
In its solid state, water froze into ice. Its liquid state was its natural form. In its gaseous state, it could become either steam or mist.
Tohru explained the familiar forms of water from his previous life to Jiraiya.
"Ahem. Not bad, kid. You even know that. What about water's pressure and impact force?"
Tohru shook his head. He had studied water pressure and impact force in physics in his previous life, but their applications in ninjutsu differed greatly from what he'd learned.
"Water pressure is mainly applied by compressing the water's volume. Most techniques use a jet of water under extremely high pressure. The thinner the jet, the more powerful it is and the greater its cutting force—like a blade. For example, the Second's Water Release: Water Severing Wave."
Jiraiya's explanation made it all click for Tohru. In ninjutsu, water pressure was mainly used in water-jet techniques. When Sage Fukasaku used a water jet to kill Pain's Animal Path Summoning Beast in the original story, he'd used water pressure.
"Then what about water's impact force, Uncle Jiraiya?"
"Water's impact force is what you see in Water Release: Great Waterfall Technique. It simply uses Chakra to create a huge volume of water and send it crashing into the enemy."
After explaining Water Release's nature transformation, Jiraiya taught Tohru his first technique: the B-rank Water Release: Water Dragon Whip, which used water pressure. The technique gathered water in one spot, then sent it shooting out in all directions.
Tohru activated his Sharingan. After Jiraiya demonstrated the technique once, he had already memorized it.
Over the next month, Tohru relied on the Sharingan, his ultimate cheat, to learn most of Jiraiya's Water Release Ninjutsu.
Jiraiya had an extremely extensive collection of techniques. After learning most of his Water Release Ninjutsu, Tohru felt that, apart from the Second's few S-rank techniques, the rest no longer interested him.
The most valuable thing Tohru found among all of Jiraiya's Water Release techniques was a Yuki Clan technique: Secret Technique: Thousand Killing Water Soar.
Although Tohru's Ice Release worked differently from the Yuki Clan's, their techniques gave him many new ideas.
"Kid, you've pretty much learned all my Water Release techniques. I've spent almost a year training you, and I've neglected my Sage Mode for far too long. From now on, you'll have to train on your own. I'm going to work on improving my Sage Mode."
Jiraiya had spent more than half a year training Tohru.
During that time, Tohru had improved his physical fitness, increased his Chakra reserves, and learned many Water Release techniques. He was grateful for Jiraiya's guidance.
Another month passed, and Tohru spent the whole time testing what happened when he froze various Water Release techniques. He discovered that the greater the pressure a Water Release technique required, the more powerful it became when frozen.
For example, after Tohru froze the Second Mizukage's Water Release: Water Severing Wave, the technique became an incredibly sharp blade of ice that could easily cut through rock.
Water Release techniques that relied on impact force instead turned into something that crashed down under gravity when frozen. Tohru decided to give up on those techniques.
Jiraiya hadn't collected any Water Release techniques based on shape transformation, so Tohru had no chance to learn them yet.
During those months, Tohru also witnessed Gamahiro growing up. The Toad Clan's growth was truly ridiculous.
In the original story, Naruto hadn't seen Gama Kichi for just a few months, yet the toad had already grown as large as Gama Bunta.
Gamahiro was the same. Tohru had personally watched him grow from smaller than Gama Kichi had been when Pain attacked Konoha in the original story to the size of Gamabunta in little over half a year.
Tohru could only gaze at "Hiro" and sigh.
