Background / History
Jiang Fen and her husband, Chen Dawei, raised Chen Shouyi and Chen Xingyue in Dongning. Within the household, she holds the final say; Chen Shouyi describes the family dynamic as one in which the women outrank the men, with his mother at the top. 2
The family is comfortably situated rather than wealthy: they own their shop property, have no rent to pay, and supplement their income with investments. When worsening conditions threaten those investments, Jiang Fen acts quickly to recover the family’s money, accompanying Chen Shouyi to withdraw their funds from Yuanlongsheng Investment Company. 6 56 85 86
She initially opposes Chen Shouyi making martial arts his primary focus, believing his lack of obvious talent would make it a waste of time during his final year of high school. After witnessing his exceptional Forward Lunge Stab, however, she agrees to fund his Advanced Swordsmanship Class, albeit by withholding his monthly living expenses. 5 6
As the world grows more dangerous, Jiang Fen repeatedly worries over Chen Shouyi’s missions and safety. She supports the family’s evacuation from Dongning after learning of her son’s strength, but remains reluctant to treat his dangerous work as something to boast about. 56 321 466
Jiang Fen was originally from Zhonghai. She had been estranged from her brothers for more than a decade after their family conflict contributed to her mother’s death; after moving to Zhonghai with her family, she agrees to visit them again. 595 596
Personality
Jiang Fen is practical, frugal, and decisive. She haggles over inflated food prices during the crisis, refuses unnecessary travel as wasteful, and immediately moves to recover the family’s investments once she judges them unsafe. 56 111 140
She is deeply protective of her children. Her early resistance to Chen Shouyi’s martial arts ambitions comes from fearing he will waste his future, while her later anxiety stems from knowing that his strength exposes him to increasingly lethal missions. She consistently asks whether he has been injured and urges him not to play the hero. 5 81 321 466
Despite the family’s improved circumstances, Jiang Fen dislikes idleness and insists on continuing to run a restaurant rather than simply relying on Chen Shouyi’s income. 240
She is also blunt and commanding with her family, readily scolding Chen Dawei, Chen Shouyi, and Chen Xingyue when she thinks they are being careless. 2 321 794
