Jiang Fen and her husband, Chen Dawei, raised Chen Shouyi and Chen Xingyue in Dongning. Within the household, she holds the final say; Chen Shouyi describes the family dynamic as one in which the women outrank the men, with his mother at the top. 2

The family is comfortably situated rather than wealthy: they own their shop property, have no rent to pay, and supplement their income with investments. She is deeply protective of her children. Her early resistance to Chen Shouyi’s martial arts ambitions comes from fearing he will waste his future, while her later anxiety stems from knowing that his strength exposes him to increasingly lethal missions.
