At this point, the captain gave an offhand sneer, as though mocking how swiftly a once-glorious family had collapsed.
"No one knows why. Perhaps she wanted to select a tenacious army, or perhaps it was simply for amusement. The Goddess issued a divine edict concerning a hunt to the death—
"She demanded that all Drow, divided by family, engage in an indiscriminate hunt to the death until only one family remained in the entire Underdark. There was no time limit, and the battlefield was the Underdark itself.
"And the sole victor would receive the Goddess's supreme favor.
"It should have been a grand sacrifice, a stage upon which we could prove the value of our existence to the Goddess.
"But the so-called rulers of Lightless City, the Kling Family, deliberately concealed this divine edict for the sake of power, so they could continue placing their so-called laws and wishes above the Goddess—
"They staged a coup. Having prepared in advance, they assassinated every family's priestesses in a single night, even 'fairly' including their own.
"So everyone merely thought it was a planned murder that warranted little attention. After all, assassination was an everyday occurrence in Lightless City.
