She waited until Tao Yan's vanguard had crossed the middle of the Miao River, while soldiers on the opposite bank were still waiting to enter the water. Then she suddenly attacked. The front ranks were dealt a crushing blow, and panic was bound to spread through the troops behind them. If they tried to retreat to shore, the men there would block their way. They would end up packed together, trampling one another, and those who couldn't make it ashore would be shoved back into the river.
Ordinary soldiers couldn't form a battle formation, so they had no morale to draw on. Worse, the rafts beneath their feet were made of morale. If they delayed too long and the morale holding the rafts together ran out, they'd all be in the river like dumplings in a pot. In such circumstances, ordinary soldiers could barely protect themselves, let alone organize a counterattack.
By comparison, those with martial energy were relatively composed.

If they still didn't die after that, they'd all be prisoners once the battle was over.
