Chapter 31: I Refuse
"Harry Potter!" At that moment, a stern-faced witch emerged from the castle entrance. It was Professor McGonagall.
The moment Harry saw Professor McGonagall, he knew what this was about, though he was still somewhat puzzled. He had assumed that without Neville breaking his arm and without his own little midair game of snatch-the-ball, Professor McGonagall would not choose him as Gryffindor House's Quidditch team's Seeker. Yet she had still noticed him.
But he already had an answer in mind, so there was no need to struggle with the decision!
"Hello, Professor McGonagall." Harry stepped forward and greeted her politely.
"Harry, there are some things I would like to discuss with you. Come with me." There was actually a hint of a smile on Professor McGonagall's usually stern face. She greeted Madam Hooch, who was teaching the students to fly, and led Harry into the school.
The other students were all curious when they saw Professor McGonagall call Harry away.
"Could it be that she's going to punish Harry for what he just did?"
"How could that be..."
"Even Madam Hooch didn't do that!"
"I think it must be something good. I thought I saw Professor McGonagall smile just now."
"It's over! Either you've gone mad, or Harry's in deep trouble! Think about it—Professor McGonagall smiled! How terrifying is that?" (Professor McGonagall: Avada Kedavra! A flash of green light appeared...)
The two walked into the stretch of corridor by the school gates. The other students wanted to look over, but the castle's thick walls blocked their view, and they could see nothing.
"Professor McGonagall, what did you want to see me about?" Harry asked directly once they stopped. Even if I know, I still have to play dumb, right? Life really is lonely as snow!
"It's like this. Gryffindor's Quidditch team Seeker, Charlie, is graduating this year. Ever since he left the team, they have been unable to find a suitable Seeker. Today, when you saved Neville, I saw your performance. It was excellent. So I would like you to become the Quidditch team's Seeker," Professor McGonagall replied. She had already imagined how thrilled Harry would be upon hearing her words...
However, Merlin once said: ideals were plump, but reality was bony!
The scene of shocked delight Professor McGonagall had expected did not appear. Instead, Harry frowned as he thought, and her heart suddenly sank... Surely not?
Harry really was thinking. He was thinking about how to refuse.
When a superior assigned a subordinate a task, especially one that was a great honor for the subordinate, only for that subordinate to refuse it—what kind of mood would the superior be in? In any case, it would not feel much better than being screwed by a dog!
Though this was a school, Professor McGonagall was a teacher, and he was a student, it still would not be a pleasant matter if he directly said he was unwilling.
Harry put on a troubled expression, then said, "I'm truly happy that Professor McGonagall is allowing me to join the Quidditch team, but I'm only a first-year. I'm not even allowed to bring a flying broom into school, and I have no Quidditch experience at all. Today was my first time ever touching a flying broom..."
Professor McGonagall hurriedly said, "That's all right. I will speak to Professor Dumbledore about it. I believe he will understand. I told you, you're excellent. As long as you train for a while, you will definitely become an outstanding Seeker!"
Harry was helpless and could only continue, "I'm very interested in Quidditch, but not as a participant—as a spectator. Only spectators get that excitement, that enjoyment, that sense of participation from cheering alongside everyone else. Team members can only race through the sky. Although they enjoy that intense competition, I'm not very interested in it."
"So, I'm sorry..."
By then, Professor McGonagall understood that Harry had little interest in playing Quidditch. She could not hide her disappointment. It seemed she would have to choose a Seeker from among the others, but the others' performances...
Seeing Professor McGonagall's expression, Harry also felt helpless. He truly did not enjoy being on the Quidditch team that much. Just as he had said, he preferred sitting in the stands and watching others perform.
But he respected Professor McGonagall greatly and did not want to disappoint her. Slytherin had already won the House Cup for six consecutive years, while Gryffindor had come second every time. Do you know what it feels like to always be second best? If not, go ask Lee Chong Wei and you'll understand! (Lee Chong Wei hugged his badminton racket and wept silently...)
As Gryffindor House's Head of House, seeing Slytherin win at every graduation ceremony could not have felt good. But Gryffindor's students were also to blame for constantly getting into trouble. If not for those mischievous little lions always finding new ways to lose Gryffindor points, Gryffindor absolutely had the strength to win the House Cup!
And this year, the George brothers seemed to have behaved much better. Combined with Harry's exceptionally dazzling performance, Professor McGonagall had secretly smiled more than once!
And every year, the House that won the Quidditch matches received extra points! That was why she had rushed out the moment she saw Harry's performance, and why she was so disappointed upon hearing him refuse!
Harry sighed silently. I'm such a bleeding-heart idiot...
"Professor McGonagall, I'd like to think some more about whether to join the team. I'll give you my answer within a week!" Harry said with a bitter smile.
Professor McGonagall said in surprise, "Really?"
Don't be so surprised, okay? I haven't agreed to it!
Harry could not bear to say that he was merely stalling for time, so he could only nod helplessly.
"All right, then hurry back to your flying lesson. You must become even more proficient," Professor McGonagall told Harry with a beaming smile before walking away happily.
Harry dragged his heavy body back to the flying grounds. He was really making trouble for himself. He could have simply refused, but now he had given her hope. Wouldn't she be even more disappointed later... Sigh.
Luo Bei: Whether Harry will join the team is still undecided. I feel that this kind of plot is boring and has no substance. Should I write a huge amount of training and match content? That would be truly boring. Do you know the most boring plot in fantasy novels? Participating in tournaments—one-on-one duels, competition after competition that can go on for dozens of chapters. Boring to the extreme. It is simply the best way to pad word count!
What do you think? This is a question.
If I write tournament duels in a fantasy novel, hehe...
Also, three readers told me to keep it up yesterday. I was very happy. Thank you. I'm that simple.
If readers think this book is worth reading, please add it to your favorites. It won't affect you much, but it is very important to me.
I only just learned that favorites are important! Thank you.
