Buckman moved in a panic, but there was little fear in his eyes.
Roland sensed that something was wrong and desperately sped up his attacks. Out of the corner of his eye, he caught sight of a Skeleton drawing a bow, another charging with a shield, and the faint glow on the Bullhead Scepter.
Boom! The Bullhead Scepter gave a soft chime, and a brilliant blue bolt shot from the tip of its horn, instantly striking Roland in the chest.
Roland felt a stabbing pain in his chest, his ears ringing. Then his whole body went numb, and he lost control of his movements, collapsing stiffly onto the ground.
His mage robe burst apart, revealing a chest covered in red magical runes. His flesh was scorched black.
"Damn it!"
Filled with unwillingness, he realized for the first time that he might actually die.
"Even if I die, I'll take you with me!"
His eyes widened as he stared fixedly at the staggering fat figure. Tensing his waist and abdomen and exerting force through all four limbs, he sprang forward like a toad, leaping more than a meter.
A bone arrow grazed his body and sank into the soft ground, leaving only the tail exposed.
Ignoring the Skeletons' attacks, Roland hooked his claws into the ground for leverage and pounced behind Buckman in two leaps.
When Buckman turned and saw Roland's ghastly appearance, his scalp tingled with terror. He raised the Bullhead Scepter and pointed it at Roland.
Roland blocked out every sound. The instant he heard the scepter's soft chime, he curled himself into a ball and rolled away.
Lightning flashed through the darkness. It grazed Roland's backside and struck the ground, its current spreading across his body and making every strand of his hair stand on end.
