The virtual world was a wonderful place, and that had been Halliday's original intention in developing Oasis.

This version of Oasis was a game world with absolutely no restrictions. As long as you had the money to buy the equipment, you had crossed the first—and only—threshold.

Oasis had its own currency and its own ways to make money. People could enjoy highly stimulating activities unavailable in the real world without taking even the slightest risk.

Between cruel reality and a wonderful virtual world, many people would choose to lose themselves in the latter.

Norman had been doing everything he could to revitalize society with Osborn's black technology, but that still required everyone's effort and time.

After something like an alien invasion, unemployment and suicide rates across the United States were actually lower than they had been during the financial crisis. That was already a miracle.

But it was easy to imagine that some people were still merely scraping by through work, since the drug abuse rate here remained among the highest in the world.

Harry believed that, given time, as the economy improved and life became easier, people would have more time to discover the beauty of reality and better distinguish between the real world and the virtual one.
