Background / History

According to the Skrull Queen, the Celestial Group experimented on the Skrull homeworld about a million years ago, producing Eternals and Aberrants with the X gene. The Aberrants defeated the other groups and became the modern Skrulls. The Queen says the Skrulls seek further evolution because the Celestial Group destroys failed experiments 327.

Earth was caught in a Kree–Skrull war more than twenty years before Carol Danvers warned Nick Fury of a new, covert Skrull invasion. Survivors of that earlier conflict had signed government secrecy agreements 322.

Abilities & Skills

Shapeshifting and impersonation

  • Skrulls can copy a person’s appearance; elite Skrulls can also partially imitate abilities 322.
  • Their infiltrators impersonate Inhumans in Attilan, students and teachers at Mutant Academy, and figures within S.H.I.E.L.D. 324 325.
  • Some can resist identification by psychics through self-hypnosis. Stolen memories can make an impersonation harder to expose: a fake Tony Stark gives answers matching the real Tony after obtaining his memory backup 322 325.
  • An imitation does not necessarily match the original’s power. A Skrull copying Professor X cannot withstand the Professor’s mental strength 325.
  • Disguised Skrulls retain identifiable physiological traits. Tony Stark, Reed Richards, and Doom use Kree information to develop a detector for them 326.

Invasion of Earth

  • Exposure in Attilan: Maximus kills an imposter posing as an Inhuman, revealing a Skrull’s true form. The exposure prompts Skrulls on Earth to act prematurely 324.
  • Infiltration of Academy City: Imposters create confusion by confronting the people they have copied. Skrulls gain control of Academy City’s Sentinel system, but the X-Men and S.H.I.E.L.D. retake the city using detection devices. Their leader, the Skrull Queen, is captured while impersonating Pepper Potts 324 325 326.
  • Fleet threat: Under interrogation, the Queen says a vanguard fleet is already in faster-than-light travel and will reach the solar system in half a month 327.
  • Collapse of the homeworld: Galactus destroys the Skrull homeworld, killing the emperor and his direct descendants. The incoming fleet cannot receive news of the destruction while in faster-than-light travel 329.
  • Defeat of the vanguard: Near Jupiter, Ultron’s forces fight the fleet while Lu Yifang boards a Skrull mothership and gives Ultron access to its main brain 331 332.
  • Imperial turmoil: With the royal succession unresolved, Skrull warlords fall into internal strife. Ultron’s Star-devouring swarm subsequently overruns one-third of the empire’s territory 350.

Relationships

  • Kree — Longstanding enemies whose knowledge helps Earth develop a Skrull detector 319 326.
  • Skrull Queen — Leader of the exposed Earth infiltrators; reveals the empire’s planned invasion and account of Skrull origins after her capture 326 327.
  • Humanity — Targeted for conquest and for study of its newly awakened X-gene potential 327.
  • Celestial Group — Experimenters identified by the Queen as the source of the Skrulls’ altered ancestry 327.
  • Ultron — Defeats the incoming fleet with Earth’s defenders, then attacks the destabilized Skrull Empire with the Star-devouring swarm 332 350.
