Background / History
Jiraiya is a celebrated Konoha shinobi and a member of the Sannin. He is a disciple of the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, and reflects nostalgically on the former harmony of the Sannin team. He is reluctant to compare Hiruzen with the previous Hokage, maintaining that every Hokage was a hero who contributed greatly to the village. 56 64
His history as a teacher is marked by loss. When Hiruzen asks him to take Uchiha Youhu as a student, Jiraiya hesitates because all six of his previous disciples have died, including some who became prominent figures. He ultimately agrees, while remaining uncertain that he is qualified to guide a prodigy like Youhu. 66 81
Jiraiya had previously taught Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan in Amegakure for three years after discovering Nagato's Rinnegan. He believed Nagato could be the Child of Prophecy, and is devastated by the possibility that the three survived, founded Akatsuki, and turned against Konoha. 116 117 119
Appearance
Jiraiya is a tall, white-haired man commonly identified by the “Oil” symbol on his forehead protector. 55
- Long white hair, which he can weaponize with ninjutsu. 54
- Often wears Konoha shinobi attire and the oil-marked headband. 55
- His imposing appearance initially frightens Karin, despite his attempt to appear friendly. 58
Personality
Jiraiya is protective, compassionate, and deeply attached to Konoha’s younger generation. When Orochimaru threatens Kakashi and Itachi, Jiraiya abandons his pursuit of his old friend to protect them. He later intervenes to stop Youhu from rashly confronting Danzo over Shisui’s disappearance, recognizing that public distrust could destabilize the village. 54 95 99
He remains hopeful even toward people who have betrayed or endangered Konoha. Jiraiya repeatedly tries to bring Orochimaru home, believes Hiruzen may forgive him, and considers personally mediating with Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan despite the danger. 54 119
Jiraiya is also vain about his literary career and easily won over by praise for his writing. Youhu’s flattery and payment persuade him to entertain writing a story featuring the self-proclaimed “Son of Destruction,” though Jiraiya worries about endorsing material contrary to Konoha’s values. 55 56
His lecherous behavior regularly undermines his dignity. Naruto catches him peeping near the women’s bathhouse, and Youhu exploits the incident to detain and tease him. 77 78

- Used Ninja Art: Wild Lion’s Mane Technique to block venomous snake heads from attacking Kakashi. 54
