Background / History

Danzo served alongside Hiruzen Sarutobi as a disciple of Tobirama Senju, but their decades-long association became defined by continual political conflict. As Root’s leader, Danzo advocated a hardline response to the Uchiha and sought to turn selected clan members—particularly Itachi and Youhu—into tools for controlling the clan from within 21 22.

His drive to become Hokage shaped both his methods and his hostility toward Hiruzen. During discussions of the Masked Man, Danzo proposed poisoning the target through an Aburame ambush even if it endangered the Nine-Tails jinchuriki, arguing that one sacrifice was preferable to another Nine-Tails’ Rampage 22. He also hoped the Masked Man could become a future partner if the latter did not seek the Hokage position 22.

Shisui’s disappearance became the turning point in Danzo’s fall. Hiruzen suspected Danzo had targeted Shisui’s Mangekyō Sharingan and temporarily revoked his authority over Root 96. The incident was complicated by Youhu having impersonated Danzo to interrogate and defeat Shisui, while Danzo later tried to exploit the disappearance by spreading allegations that Youhu had taken Shisui’s eyes 87 101.

Youhu, Jiraiya, and Kakashi infiltrated Root and uncovered prisoners, human experimentation, Wood Style research, and a collection of Sharingan. The evidence showed that Danzo’s arm contained implanted Sharingan used to suppress volatile Hashirama Cells 100 102. When confronted by Youhu and Hiruzen, Danzo attempted to kill Youhu, used Izanagi to escape the loss of his arm, and fled Konoha after his activities were exposed 102.

As a rogue ninja, Danzo partnered uneasily with Orochimaru. He remained focused on returning to Konoha, attempted to recruit the Kaguya Clan as a future force, and joined Orochimaru in abducting a Kaguya child for the Shikotsumyaku bloodline 132 149 150. He later persuaded Orochimaru to reanimate Hashirama and Tobirama, misleading his former teacher into believing that Youhu had seized Konoha and controlled Hiruzen 164 166.

During a later confrontation with Youhu, Danzo’s right arm was severed again, exposing its embedded Sharingan. Without the arm’s suppression, his Hashirama Cells began transforming his body into a tree. His attempt to take Youhu with him using the Reverse Four Symbols Seal was interrupted, ending in his death and eventual reanimation 201.

His pragmatism is ruthless. He is willing to risk Naruto in an ambush, cultivate orphaned children into death warriors, and use experiments involving village ninja to acquire power 22 112 201. Danzo is also suspicious and easily driven into increasingly elaborate conclusions when events escape his control.
