Background and History
Danzō and Orochimaru implanted Hashirama’s cells into sixty abducted children in an attempt to reproduce Wood Style. Yamato survived when the other subjects died, but Orochimaru initially judged him a failure and abandoned him. Danzō later found him and raised him as a Root ninja. When Danzō handed Kano over to Orochimaru for further training, Orochimaru took him as a disciple and renamed him Yamato 149 457.
The experiments remained a source of trauma: Yamato remembered watching other subjects die and being treated as a tool by Orochimaru. At Ryūchi Cave, he recoiled from Snake Aunt, Orochimaru’s clone, and panicked on encountering Uchiha Ryobu. Ryobu subdued him with chakra-absorbing vines and implanted a controlling spore 440 441.
Yamato later joined Anko in opposing Orochimaru. Although he was unwilling to trust Orochimaru again, he also struggled with the conflict between his Root allegiance and Ryobu’s control. Hashirama subsequently removed the spore, completed Yamato’s Wood Style, and welcomed him into the Senju clan after Yamato pledged to protect the Leaf Village 457 529.
During the war, Yamato served as captain of a group guarding Kushina and Yugito. He later trained in Wood Style alongside Kushina 620 680. In a later-era mission to Rōran, he and Naruto were swept into the Dragon Vein and returned with their memories of the earlier era sealed. Yamato pressed for an investigation; Inoichi confirmed that an Uzumaki sealing technique had sealed part of his memory 715 826 828 830.
Personality
Yamato is committed to the Leaf Village, even placing its interests above his own safety. He resisted losing the intelligence he had gained in the past because he believed it could help Konoha confront Akatsuki 506 826. After the Rōran mission, he insisted on a mental examination despite the risk of damage to his brain 830.
His Root training gives him a guarded demeanor, but it does not erase his fear of Orochimaru or his distress at being controlled by Ryobu. Hashirama’s kindness and acceptance visibly moved him 440 457 529 620.
