Ch. 481Crystallization

Key plot points and events

  • Sky confronts Seraphina at the tavern, accusing her of causing the Botanical Garden disaster. Xia Lin and Kade point out that no one was hurt and Seraphina dealt with the mutated plants herself. Sky abandons the arrest but insists on filing a report and continues “surveillance.”
  • Seraphina teases Sky about her earlier closeness to Xia Lin, embarrassing her with suggestive music.
  • Kade tells Seraphina about the group’s adventures and demonstrates his mythic ability, [Heavenly Ascension]. His mother is proud, especially when she hears they met Veronica, a crystal dragon and playwright.
  • Sera reveals that Xia Lin and Veronica shared a romantic connection. Seraphina is thrilled by the news, while Sky realizes the Grand Inquisitor concealed Xia Lin’s heroic role in saving New Stefan.
  • At dinner, Seraphina’s chaotic behavior contrasts with a tender moment as she watches Kade and recognizes how much he has grown.
  • Later, Seraphina thanks Xia Lin for supporting Kade and recounts how Kade became unusually self-sufficient as a child because she was often absent or forgetful.
  • When Xia Lin asks about Kade’s father, Seraphina says Kade was conceived after encounters with partners of several races and asks Xia Lin to keep the truth from Kade, who believes she simply forgot his father’s name.
  • Seraphina flirts with Xia Lin, but Kade’s arrival makes her disappear. Xia Lin and Kade return to the tavern for a drink, and Xia Lin privately vows to keep Kade’s parentage secret.

Character developments and interactions

  • Kade is revealed as a responsible, caring adult who had to look after himself from childhood. Despite Seraphina’s neglectful habits, he clearly loves her, and she feels genuine pride and affection for him.
  • Seraphina remains flamboyant, mischievous, and provocative, but her quiet reflections show her sincere love for her son and gratitude toward Xia Lin.
  • Xia Lin mediates between Sky and Seraphina, supports Kade, and responds to Kade’s difficult childhood with sympathy. He also protects Kade by agreeing to keep his parentage secret.
  • Sky shifts from anger and attempted arrest to wary observation. Learning that Xia Lin’s party saved New Stefan exposes that her superiors withheld crucial information, undermining her trust in the assignment.
  • Sera enjoys provoking the others, particularly by teasing Xia Lin about Veronica and drawing Seraphina into the story.

Significant themes

  • Found family and friendship: Kade’s companions support him, while Xia Lin treats him as a brother.
  • Growth and independence: Kade’s maturity is admired, but it grew partly from having to care for himself too young.
  • Truth and secrecy: Sky discovers official deception, while Xia Lin takes on the burden of concealing Kade’s uncertain parentage.
  • Chaos and affection: Seraphina’s disruptive antics coexist with real warmth, especially in her relationship with Kade.

Ch. 482People cannot write what they cannot imagine

Summary

The narrator describes a news story about an influencer who called 42 religious institutions, claiming to be a single mother in need of baby formula. Buddhist, Muslim, Satanist, and Jewish groups all responded; even a drug dealer reached by mistake offered help. By contrast, only 27% of white Christian institutions responded. The few helpful Christian groups were conservative Black congregations, plus one elderly priest at a poor church in a small town. Some major cathedrals ignored or mocked the caller, with one suggesting she sell her body.
When the experiment was exposed, cathedral representatives claimed God had revealed that the woman was a scammer, branded her a witch, and called for her death. The narrator sarcastically condemns this behavior, then recognizes the story as resembling a familiar fantasy-novel pattern: a corrupt, wealthy “Radiant Church,” compassionate outsiders cast as heretics, and a poor old priest who remains faithful to his beliefs.

Character developments and interactions

The narrator moves from outrage at the institutions’ responses to reflecting on how closely the real story resembles a common fictional trope. The influencer’s calls reveal a sharp contrast between institutions that offer practical help and those that reject or condemn her. The lone elderly priest stands apart from the wealthy cathedrals as someone who acts according to his convictions.

Significant themes

  • Compassion versus religious hypocrisy: Institutions claiming moral authority fail to help someone in need, while groups labeled outsiders offer aid.
  • Power and institutional corruption: The cathedrals’ response suggests that authority can be used to justify cruelty and protect status.
  • Reality and fiction: The narrator observes that real events can echo familiar fantasy plots.
  • Who lives by their beliefs: The story contrasts public religious claims with the actions of those who genuinely practice compassion.

Ch. 483A complete mess

Plot points

  • The group gathers for their final breakfast at Kade’s home, but his mother, Seraphina, never comes downstairs. Kade finds a letter revealing she has left to perform at a distant artistic gathering.
  • In the letter, Seraphina reassures Kade that she trusts his maturity and companions, thanks them for looking after him, and offers personal advice and teasing remarks to each of them.
  • Though disappointed that the group’s efforts to find her were unnecessary, Kade accepts that Seraphina cares about him and is safe. The group prepares to return to the capital aboard Sky’s aircraft, the Windchaser.
  • After landing, Sky explains that her assignment has changed: she will report on the Botanical Garden threat and Seraphina’s threat level. She leaves before Xia Lin can speak further.
  • Xia Lin suspects Sky is also upset that her superior withheld information about him, but decides that resolving the issue is her responsibility. The group turns to its next task: investigating the Mage Tower’s Mystery Lock and the mage connected to it.

Character developments and interactions

  • Kade is hurt and deflated by his mother’s sudden departure, but recognizes her affection and encouragement. He regains his composure and refocuses on the group’s plans.
  • Seraphina remains an affectionate but unpredictable presence even in absentia. Her letter shows pride in Kade, warmth toward his friends, and her characteristic teasing.
  • Sky keeps her distance from Xia Lin after their intimate moment the previous night, acting cold and strictly professional. Her brisk departure suggests unresolved embarrassment and anger, likely intensified by her superior’s secrecy.
  • Xia Lin offers Kade comfort and insight into Sky’s possible frustration, while choosing not to involve himself in her conflict.
  • Sera and Celia tease Xia Lin about Sky’s awkwardness, while also responding to Seraphina’s advice: Celia is encouraged to accept her other self and grow stronger.

Significant themes

  • Growing up and letting go: Seraphina recognizes that Kade has become capable of standing with his own team, allowing her to leave.
  • Family affection amid chaos: Her reckless behavior frustrates Kade, but her letter makes clear that she loves and believes in him.
  • Trust, secrecy, and responsibility: Sky’s uncertainty about Xia Lin and her superior’s withheld information remains unresolved.
  • Moving forward together: After a turbulent mission, the companions resume their individual duties and shared investigation—after breakfast.

Ch. 484Playing house

Key plot points and events

  • Sky Starcrest confronts Grand Inquisitor Calderon over Xia Lin’s file, which omitted his role in the Battle of New Stefan, the red dragon Anlin, the Flying City, and mythical power.
  • Calderon admits he kept Sky’s assignments limited because her powerful family might retaliate if she were hurt. He reveals that he initially approved her Inquisition career as a favor to her family, assuming it was a brief “playing house” phase.
  • Devastated, Sky refuses a month’s leave and insists on continuing her surveillance assignment on Xia, though Calderon says it is no longer needed. She leaves while colleagues who had been eavesdropping awkwardly scatter.
  • Levi reports the destruction of another stronghold of Pazuzu’s followers. Calderon nominates him for Commander; Levi, however, is preoccupied with Sky and fears she may be recalled by her family.
  • The next day, Xia enjoys being free of Sky’s surveillance. He brings liquor to Master Qi Feng and learns White Crane Spreads Its Wings, gaining a defensive dodge bonus and the ability to counterattack from a defensive stance.
  • Xia visits the Adventurer’s Guild to borrow books on Mystery Locks, intending to have Sera study them. He then heads into Nirose’s shopping district to find a shop that can process meteorite iron and an Overbred Life Seedpod.
  • Xia unexpectedly finds a branch of Rola’s Wondrous Item Shop and enters, planning to consult Master Laura about Mystery Locks and the mysterious iron box he owns.

Character developments and interactions

  • Sky learns that her career has been shaped by Calderon’s effort to protect her and placate her family. Her belief that her work was taken seriously is badly shaken, but she responds with stubborn resolve rather than accepting leave.
  • Calderon reveals his pragmatic, paternalistic approach: he values Sky’s accomplishments but considers keeping her safe and avoiding conflict with her family more important than her operational contribution.
  • Levi receives recognition and a Commander nomination, yet his concern for Sky hints at personal feelings or unresolved history.
  • Xia continues pursuing practical goals—martial training, research, and processing valuable materials—while making use of his connection with Qi Feng and seeking advice from Master Laura.
  • Qi Feng teaches Xia through a mix of blunt criticism and genuine instruction, acknowledging his aptitude once he masters the basic form.

Significant themes

  • Agency versus protection: Sky’s family status and Calderon’s caution have constrained her independence, despite her achievements.
  • Recognition and betrayal: Sky’s discovery that her career was treated as a favor makes her question the meaning of eight years of service.
  • Duty and personal attachment: Calderon and Levi respond differently to Sky’s likely departure—Calderon accepts it as inevitable, while Levi is visibly troubled.
  • Growth through practice: Xia’s training shows steady progress, while his research into Mystery Locks points toward a larger unresolved mystery.

Ch. 485Seeds of the Future

Plot points and events

  • Xia Lin visits Rola’s Nirose curios shop, where he finds expensive, mostly anti-demon equipment. He cannot afford the weapons, but the shopkeeper recognizes his certification card from Master Rola and offers him a discount.
  • Xia Lin solves the shop’s monthly logic puzzle, earning a second discount. His solution depends on the demon’s chaotic-evil nature: its claim must be false, leaving the mage as the only truth-teller.
  • He buys a magical triceratops statuette for about 203 gold and 2 silver. It can summon a loyal, fully capable level-5 dinosaur once per day for twelve hours.
  • Rola summons Xia Lin upstairs. Xia Lin asks for help with the Mystery Lock guarding an ancient Mage Tower. Rola admits he cannot teach him the subject directly: his expertise is in unconventional spell combinations, and his study of traditional magic stops at the sixth circle.
  • Rola gives Xia Lin a Scholar’s Monocle that boosts knowledge checks, warning that mistakes while researching a Mystery Lock could trigger lethal traps.
  • Xia Lin shows Rola a meteorite fragment and an Overbred Life Pod. Rola identifies the fragment as valuable meteoric iron, useful for legendary arms and armor, and provides an introduction to a trusted Nirose blacksmith, Sli Klin. He jokes that the pod may be an aphrodisiac.
  • After Xia Lin leaves, Rola reflects that Xia Lin did not ask about the valuable scroll and chest he had entrusted to him. Rola examines the chest: its rust has vanished and complex, living-looking magical patterns now cover it. Uneasy, he murmurs, “The seeds of the future lie buried deep within the past…”

Character developments and interactions

  • Xia Lin is resource-conscious but opportunistic: he avoids unaffordable weapons, then readily spends on a useful summon. His quick puzzle-solving and familiarity with Earth-style brainteasers help him impress the shop staff and reconnect with Rola.
  • Rola reveals limits to his knowledge, distinguishing himself as an innovative but unconventional mage rather than an all-knowing master. He supports Xia Lin with a valuable research tool and a practical referral, while teasing him about the pod.
  • Xia Lin and Rola share a respectful mentor–student relationship, though Rola’s private concern about the chest suggests Xia Lin may be underestimating the importance or progress of their investigation.
  • The shop staff treat Xia Lin with increasing deference after seeing his certification card and witnessing him solve the puzzle.

Significant themes

  • Knowledge has limits: Even a brilliant mage cannot master every field, and advanced research requires caution.
  • Preparation and resourcefulness: Xia Lin invests in a versatile summon and an aid to studying a dangerous magical mechanism.
  • The past shaping the future: The transformed chest and Rola’s final cryptic remark foreshadow a mystery whose ancient origins may affect what lies ahead.
  • Humor amid danger: Puzzle banter and Rola’s teasing lighten the chapter while the lethal Mystery Lock and ominous chest hint at serious risks.

Ch. 486Ants and rats

Xia Lin visited Sli Klin, a Fermi Antfolk blacksmith, who proposed turning Xia Lin’s fallen-star iron into an Enchantment Stone. Xia Lin went to the Sewer Market to find Swift Rats for the required materials and arrived as a confrontation erupted at the Rat Racing Tournament.

  • Xia Lin found Sli Klin’s strange smithy and met the antfolk craftsman, who communicated by writing.
  • Sli Klin examined Xia Lin’s fallen-star iron and recommended making it into an Enchantment Stone, listing the materials and cost.
  • Xia Lin returned the next day to the Sewer Market to buy five live Swift Rats, but the vendor was watching a commotion at the arena.
  • Xia Lin reached the front row and saw the bookmaker facing a silver-haired figure in gray combat clothes, who accused him of cheating.

Ch. 487Conflict

At a rat-racing den in the Sewer Market, Sky accused Gap-Tooth of cheating, but Mad Rat turned the dispute into a confrontation when Sky refused to back down. After Sky knocked out one of his men, Xia Lin stepped between her and Mad Rat to try to defuse the situation.

  • Sky accused Gap-Tooth of feeding a stimulant to a racing rat, and Mad Rat threatened him while weighing whether to protect his subordinate.
  • Mad Rat offered Sky a chance to retract her accusation, but she insisted Gap-Tooth had cheated and demanded punishment and refunds.
  • Gap-Tooth blamed Sky on Old Ink's gang, and Mad Rat's men surrounded her as she drew her Hand Crossbow.
  • Sky flipped the mohawked gang member onto the floor and held him at crossbow-point, provoking Mad Rat.
  • Xia Lin rushed between Sky and Mad Rat, called Sky his cousin, and urged her to put away her crossbow.

Ch. 488Defusing the situation

Xia Lin defused a sewer-arena confrontation by exposing Gap-Tooth’s scheme, then tried to send Sky away. After Sky broke down over feeling rejected, she silently followed Xia Lin through the Sewer Market as he headed to buy rat livers.

  • Xia Lin used The Actor's Mask to keep Sky quiet, then exposed berserk rat sage juice on Gap-Tooth's cuff and proved he had been lying.
  • Mad Rat ordered Gap-Tooth taken to the Black Pit and thanked Xia Lin for helping him save face.
  • Xia Lin told Sky that the sewers were no place for her, prompting her to cry and ask if she was unwelcome everywhere.
  • Xia Lin led Sky away from the arena and bought her a grilled meat skewer, but she remained silent and followed him.
  • Xia Lin set rules for Sky to follow, then continued toward the rat seller's stall with her trailing behind.

Ch. 489The Gloomy Whisperer

Xia Lin and Sky bought sleeping Swift Rats and visited Rotten Bone to find shadow spider silk, where they reunited with Ruiwen. Since Ruiwen was out of stock, she offered to lead them to a Shadow Spider nest in the sewers, and the group set off together.

  • Xia Lin bought five cages of Swift Rats, put them to sleep with [Potent Sleeping Powder], and gave the bundle to Sky.
  • Xia Lin and Sky found the shop Rotten Bone, where Ruiwen startled them by appearing behind the counter.
  • Ruiwen explained that Doctor Azma had sent her to work at the shop to practice socializing, though she preferred dissecting creatures.
  • Ruiwen told Xia Lin that [shadow spider silk] was out of stock and offered to guide him to a Shadow Spider nest in the sewers.
  • Xia Lin agreed, and Ruiwen finished tidying up before joining him and Sky on the way to the nest.
