Acting Death God?

Ling Chu stared at the question the system had popped up and did not rush to accept.

She asked the system, "What does Acting Death God mean?"

The system replied: [Acting Death God is not a full position as a chief god. If you accept, you will exercise part of the authority over death while Mortus sleeps and take on the corresponding duties of the Death Office. Your status as acting Death God will be reassessed when Mortus awakens or the Death Office changes hands.]

Ling Chu read it and more or less understood.

In plain terms, she would be a temp filling in for Mortus.

She did not like the sound of that, but...

"Is there a chance an acting Death God can get the permanent job?"

The system fell silent for several seconds.

Ling Chu's eyes brightened. It had not said no. That meant there was a chance.

Sure enough, a new line of text slowly appeared.

[The Death Office does not belong to the same god forever. While fulfilling its duties, an acting Death God may continue to accumulate death Divine Power and compatibility with the office. If both surpass those of the current chief god of death, the Realm Walker will reassess who ultimately holds the position.]

Ling Chu changed her mind at once.

She had no interest in accepting a Death God follower's legacy just to work for the Death God.

But if doing the job meant she might become the Death God herself... that was different.

Hadn't Mortus called her "mortal" and "Soul Remnants" at every turn?

When he woke in a few hundred years and found someone else in his position as Death God, she wondered what his face would look like.

Ling Chu found herself looking forward to it.
