Background / History

After his wife saved him from an assassin's arrow, Li Nuo abandoned his earlier assumptions about women of the era and recognized that martial strength was essential to survival. He sought Steward Wu's guidance on the Ways of the Hundred Schools, chose the Legalist path in imitation of his father, Li Xuanjing, and framed his goal as both self-protection and the pursuit of justice. 7

Li Nuo's cultivation became inseparable from his work with prisoners and cases. His Codex records portraits of prisoners whose abilities meet its standards; he can temporarily inherit their exceptional skills, but using those skills costs one day of his lifespan. Ordinary competence is insufficient—the Codex recognizes only abilities practiced to an exceptional peak. 16 25

He entered official life through the Chang'an County Office, where judging cases could restore lifespan. His drive to pursue powerful offenders, including Li Yuan, also became a means of advancing his Legalist cultivation. 25 89 90

Li Nuo later supported Zhao Zhiyi's ascension in Zhao State, becoming its Prince and effectively serving as regent while remaining a Great Xia envoy. Afterward, he returned to Great Xia with enhanced political influence and a wider network across both states. 355

Li Nuo is pragmatic, adaptable, and intensely concerned with survival. His first motivation for studying cultivation is to avoid being killed, yet this self-preserving instinct develops into a sustained commitment to law, reform, and protecting the common people. 7 95 355
