Jiraiya leaned against the windowsill in the Hokage's Office, his arms casually folded across his chest and his face wearing his trademark carefree grin. He seemed both exasperated and resolute about Hiruzen Sarutobi's proposal.
"Please, spare me, Lord Hokage. You're still in fine health. Someone like me isn't suited to being tied down by the Hokage Position." Jiraiya sounded a little helpless.
Hiruzen Sarutobi furrowed his brows at that, clearly surprised by Jiraiya's refusal. "Why aren't you suited for it? In terms of strength, you're one of Konoha's top shinobi. In terms of reputation and seniority, your name rings throughout the Ninja World. In terms of experience, you've been through countless battles. What about you doesn't meet the requirements for Hokage?"
Jiraiya shrugged and smiled. "You know how laid-back I am. Having me sit in an office all day handling paperwork isn't something I can even imagine. Besides, the Hokage's responsibilities are too heavy. I'm afraid I couldn't shoulder them."
As he spoke, Jiraiya's expression suddenly turned serious. "Still, I do have someone better in mind. I just need some time to find him. How does that sound?"
Hiruzen Sarutobi sighed helplessly, but then seemed to think of something. A meaningful smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. "Three months at most. If you can't find a suitable candidate by then, the Hokage Position will be yours."
Jiraiya readily agreed. "No problem. I'll do my best. But don't go back on your word when the time comes!"
The two exchanged smiles, and the tension eased at once.
Hiruzen Sarutobi knew that although Jiraiya seemed carefree, his loyalty and love for Konoha were every bit as strong as anyone's.
Jiraiya understood, too, that Hiruzen Sarutobi was insisting on this because he had Konoha's future in mind.
Just then, Naruto suddenly spoke. His words were like a pebble tossed into a still lake, sending ripples through the Hokage's Office.
"If you're going to keep passing it back and forth, why not just let me do it?" Naruto said seriously, leaving everyone present momentarily stunned.
Jiraiya was the first to react. He walked over to Naruto, grinned, and ruffled his hair. "I think that works. Naruto's pretty suitable. He may be young, but his strength is top-notch."
Kakashi and the other Jonin laughed along. They knew Naruto's words were a little unrealistic, but his courage and bluntness were infectious.
Hiruzen Sarutobi, however, put on a stern face and said with mock seriousness, "Don't be ridiculous, Naruto. The Hokage Position isn't something you can joke about."
Naruto's age was plain to see. Standing among a group of Jonin, he was just a child.
Everyone knew how strong he was and how much potential he had, but in a formal setting like this, they couldn't help seeing him as a child.
The reason Hiruzen Sarutobi had summoned Naruto to the meeting and was passing the Hokage Position to Jiraiya, Naruto's nominal teacher, was to hint at what was to come and lay the groundwork.
Traditionally, the Hokage Position had generally passed from teacher to student. This was also a way to pave the way for Naruto's future.
Hiruzen Sarutobi hoped Naruto would learn from the process and prepare himself for the responsibilities he might one day shoulder.
The atmosphere in the Hokage's Office gradually settled.
Hiruzen Sarutobi shook his head slightly, a faint, almost imperceptible smile on his lips. It held a complex mix of exasperation and anticipation for the younger generation.
"All right, Naruto. I hear your ambition, but the Hokage Position is no game. It carries the weight of all Konoha." Hiruzen Sarutobi spoke gently but firmly, answering Naruto while also reminding all the Jonin present.
Jiraiya patted Naruto on the shoulder and said in a lighthearted yet respectful tone, "Naruto, you're still young. You'll have plenty of time and chances to prove yourself. For now, let your Grandpa Sarutobi keep working a little longer. Hahaha!"
Kakashi also chimed in at just the right moment, speaking in his usual calm tone. "Naruto, becoming Hokage takes more than strength. You need wisdom and experience, too. What you need to do now is keep building those. I believe you'll make it someday."
Naruto smiled at their words. He had only been joking, and he understood the weight of the Hokage Position.
He nodded, determination gleaming in his eyes. The particular resolve within Naruto was taking root and beginning to grow: he would become Hokage and protect Konoha.
In the end, the matter of the Hokage stepping down came to nothing that day.
Mornings in Konoha were always peaceful and serene, as if the whole world were asleep in that moment, waiting for the first rays of sunlight to awaken it.
Mist curled through the air, draping the village like a sheer veil and lending the ninja village an air of mystery and quiet.
Through the hazy mist, two figures slowly entered Konoha's gates.
They wore black cloaks embroidered with red clouds, their hems swaying gently in the breeze. Every step they took was unhurried and composed.
