Background / History

Kakashi leads Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura on their C-rank escort mission for bridge builder Tazuna. He quickly recognizes that the assignment has been misrepresented after two Kirigakure chūnin attack the group, and demands that Tazuna explain why assassins are targeting him. 1 2 3

During the Land of Waves conflict, Kakashi identifies Momochi Zabuza before the enemy makes his move. He orders his genin to protect Tazuna rather than engage a jōnin, but is eventually deceived by Zabuza's Water Clone and imprisoned in the Water Prison. Naruto's Azure breaks Haku's Ice Prison and collapses the Water Prison, allowing Kakashi to rejoin the battle. 3 4 6 8

The mission radically changes Kakashi's view of Naruto. He initially mistakes Naruto's use of Infinity for fear-induced paralysis, but later witnesses his overwhelming cursed techniques and Nine-Tails chakra. As a teacher, he is stern about battlefield discipline and initially reprimands Naruto for remaining inactive during the Kirigakure ambush.
