Sunlight dappled the open Third Training Ground in Konoha. The towering trees around it stood like silent guardians, bearing witness to the test of strength about to begin.
Kakashi stood beside Hiruzen Sarutobi, whose expression was kindly but still carried an air of authority. Both of their eyes were fixed on the blond, blue-eyed boy wearing sunglasses before them—Naruto.
Sakura stood off to the side. Saying she'd join in was just a way to tease Naruto; in a fight like this, she wouldn't be much use. But once the battle was over, her healing ninjutsu would come in handy.
"Naruto, this test is mainly to assess your Taijutsu fundamentals and reaction speed." Kakashi's voice was clear and firm, with a hint of encouragement. "You can use small-scale, controlled ninjutsu to assist you, but remember, you're not allowed to use any techniques with overwhelming power."
Hiruzen Sarutobi heard this and gently patted Naruto on the shoulder. "That's right, Naruto. These old bones of mine can't take too much of a beating. Remember to go easy on me."
Naruto grinned. "Grandpa Sarutobi, don't worry. You're my hero. You're still in your prime, aren't you?"
When he heard the test would focus on Taijutsu and small-scale ninjutsu, Naruto felt a rush of excitement he could hardly put into words.
He loved that direct, pure style of fighting, trading blows up close. What fun was a fight if you could just kill someone the moment they showed themselves?
At Kakashi's command, the test officially began.
