Background / History

Gaara was made Shukaku's Jinchūriki before birth when his father, the Fourth Kazekage Rasa, sealed the tailed beast into Karura while she was pregnant. Rasa later admitted that this decision caused Karura's death and subjected Gaara to a childhood of isolation, fear, and repeated assassination attempts. Yashamaru's claim that Karura did not love Gaara was also a lie ordered by Rasa to test whether Shukaku would rampage. 55 118 119

Despite being treated as a monster by Sunagakure, Gaara eventually became its Kazekage and earned the village's respect by protecting it. Naruto recognizes the scale of this achievement, particularly because Gaara reached that position without the support system Naruto had in Konoha. 55

Personality

Gaara initially presents himself as cold, intimidating, and willing to threaten violence to enforce his authority; Kankuro immediately suppresses his anger when Gaara orders him to stop. He also possesses a dangerous battle lust, which intensifies before his match with Rock Lee. 15 28
