for the shotgun she had dropped. She turned toward the open red iron gate.
The gunshot seemed to have stirred something. From beyond the gate came a jumble of footsteps,
along with bursts of
roaring.
She looked around. The walls were too high, and the electrified wire above them made climbing out all but impossible. But if
she wanted to leave through the exit, she would have to
pass right in front of that gate. The footsteps told her she could not reach the exit before whatever was inside rushed
out.
She glanced back at the zombie. Strictly speaking, it was not entirely a zombie, but somewhere between a corpse and a zombie. It must have been bitten
recently and had not yet fully
changed.
The skin on its arms was already turning dark gray. In another day or two, it would probably become a half-corpse
.
But that was not the point. The point was, what was she going to do now?
Leaving
