"Yan Kanxi... one of the six bandits Sun Wukong killed back then."
On the way to Yellow Wind Ridge, Adam studied the root vessel shaped like a Double-Pupiled Bird and learned that it was called Yan Kanxi.
The name came from one of the six mountain bandits Sun Wukong encountered just after Tang Sanzang rescued him from beneath Five Elements Mountain. The six were named Yan Kanxi, Er Tingnu, Bi Xiuai, She Changsi, Yi Jianyu, and Shen Benyou.
These six bandits symbolized the Six Dusts that contaminated the six faculties. In cultivation, one needed to sever all six, which was the "No Eyes, Ears, Nose, Tongue, Body, Mind" spoken of in the Heart Sutra.
And to sever the six bandits, one needed to subdue the Mind Monkey.
The moment Tang Sanzang rescued Sun Wukong, these six appeared, only for Sun Wukong to kill them with remarkable decisiveness. The chapter title had stated its meaning plainly—
The Mind Monkey Returns to Righteousness, the Six Bandits Vanish Without Trace.
After severing the six bandits, to prevent the Mind Monkey from causing trouble, Guanyin gave Tang Sanzang the Tightening Spell, also known as the Heart-Stabilizing Mantra, to restrain the Mind Monkey.
Although this world had become strange under the influence of corruption, Adam would not have been overly surprised if Great Thunderclap Temple had now become just like Zhengde Temple.
But along the Person of Destiny's journey, aside from the arrangements of Eastern Heaven, Western Heaven, and all sorts of good and evil forces, there must also have been arrangements left behind by that group from the Three Pure Ones before they departed, all to let Sun Wukong attain the meaning of Primordial Unity.
So there had to be a proper path of cultivation among it all, one meant to allow Sun Wukong
