"Yellow Wind Monster wasn't the only one whose ears heard anger. Lingji was too."
Adam shook his head.
He was beginning to grasp it now. Black Wind Mountain's Relic, Eyes That See Joy—didn't it correspond to Elder Jinchi and Black Bear Demon, who had seen the Brocade Kasaya and been consumed by greed?
The eyes saw joy, and joy gave rise to the desire to possess.
The former had cultivated Buddhist teachings all his life and lived to be two hundred and seventy, only to perish in a sea of flames because of greed.
When the latter came to save people and saw the kasaya, he immediately forgot Elder Jinchi, who was still in the flames. He snatched up the kasaya and fled, only to be taken by Guanyin to Mount Luojia as its guardian deity.
One lost his life, and the other lost his freedom. In the end, it was all because of Eyes That See Joy—or rather, greed.
And now, Yellow Wind Ridge appeared to tell the story of Ears That Hear Anger, and wrath.
Yellow Wind Monster heard that insect demons were causing trouble and became enraged. Without distinguishing cause from effect, he wiped them out. It seemed like a good deed, yet it brought an even greater calamity upon Sihali Kingdom.
Lingji Bodhisattva heard that Sihali Kingdom had banned Buddhism and revered rats, and became enraged. He took his anger out on an entire nation, turning all of Sihali Kingdom's people into rats and causing the kingdom's destruction.
"While the Person of Destiny retrieves the Six Roots, are these stories also teaching him not to be controlled by them, helping him master the Six Roots?"
Adam looked toward the towering pillar of wind on Yellow Wind Ridge.
