Wei Yuan was born into the Wei family of Ye County, Yongzhou. Zhang Sheng named him “Yuan” shortly before his birth, associating the name with a dragon hidden in an abyss. His birth coincided with Zhang Sheng's ritual at the Wei Residence and a series of auspicious signs 1.

By age three, Wei Yuan was already unusually tall, strong, and fearless. During a drought-driven refugee assault on the Wei Residence, he killed a refugee to protect his father, Wei Youcai. The event exposed him early to the violence and scarcity of the mortal world 2.

After the attack, Zhang Sheng was compelled to remain at the Wei Residence and accepted Wei Yuan as his disciple. Over three years, Zhang Sheng taught him history, political reasoning, writing, and how to weigh competing interests rather than accept simple judgments of right and wrong 3 4.
