The tall, burly man rubbed his chin and headed toward the warehouse where the base personnel were being held, grinning as he said, "I've always liked the wild ones."

The other two interested players were more subtle than the blunt man. They reminded him to take her to a small room and not make too much of a scene.

The tall man waved them off, unconcerned. He went into the warehouse and shut the door behind him.

There were at least dozens of people locked inside, but he showed no intention of holding back. If anything, he seemed eager to do the opposite.

Before long, a faint disturbance came from inside the warehouse. The base personnel and the people who had sought shelter there had been ordered to keep quiet. Anyone who spoke or made a sound had been shot—that was the iron rule laid down by the middle-aged man in charge. So no one found it strange that no voices came from the warehouse.

But after a while, the people outside began to sense that something was wrong. The warehouse was too quiet.

Everyone immediately became alert. At the middle-aged man's signal, two players standing near the warehouse slipped over without a sound.
