Background / History

Usopp grew up in Syrup Village and regularly visited Kaya after the deaths of her parents left her depressed and ill. He entertained her with tall tales, though Kaya understood that many of them were invented and chose to play along. 6

After learning from Reiner and the others that Kaya’s butler, Kuro, was actually a pirate, Usopp immediately rushed to warn her. Though Kaya initially dismissed the warning as another story, Usopp produced Kuro’s bounty poster and persisted despite the danger. 5 6

Luffy recognized Usopp as Yasopp’s son and invited him to join the crew after hearing his ambition to become a brave warrior of the sea. Usopp ultimately left Syrup Village aboard the Going Merry with the Straw Hat Crew, while Kaya supported his decision despite her disappointment at seeing him leave. 5 8

He contributed to the crew beyond combat from the beginning: he loaded supplies onto the Going Merry and designed the Straw Hat Pirates’ first flag, depicting a white skull in a yellow straw hat. 9

Appearance

Usopp is initially described as a bronze-skinned young man with a long nose, afro, and fanny pack. Following his two-year training, he develops a lean but visibly muscular physique; later, his hair is described as messy dreadlocks. 5 242 447

  • Distinctive long nose. 5
  • Afro hairstyle during his early voyage. 5
  • Carries ammunition and equipment in a waist pouch. 5 151
  • Wears a Sogeking mask during the Enies Lobby operation. 118

Personality

Usopp repeatedly wavers between fear and courage. He panics when confronted with threats such as Arlong, zombies, powerful pirate crews, and Izo, often claiming to have sudden illnesses to avoid fighting. 10 141 273

Despite this, he acts decisively when others need protection. He endangered himself to warn Kaya about Kuro, trained because he hated being the crew’s weakest combatant, and continued facing opponents far beyond his confidence level. 6 39 273

He is boastful and enjoys recognition for his victories, particularly after defeating Izo. However, defeats—especially against Yasopp—force him to confront the limits of his current strength rather than abandon his goal of becoming brave. 278 447 448

Abilities & Skills

Marksmanship

Usopp is the Straw Hat Crew’s sniper and specializes in precision fire, curved trajectories, prepared ammunition, and long-range suppression.

  • Shot down Izo’s high-speed bullet in midair, prompting Izo to judge his shooting skill as exceptionally dangerous. 273
  • Uses Observation Haki to anticipate movement and target likely evasive routes. 242 276
  • Can maintain rapid alternating fire with two revolvers while moving through his own hazardous terrain. 276 277
  • His sniper ability is acknowledged by Yasopp, who considers Usopp’s natural sniping talent comparable to his own. 447

Observation Haki

Usopp trained in Haki before Alabasta and later developed an Observation Haki application suited to sniping. 39 242

  • Predicts opponents’ countermeasures and dodging directions during long-range engagements. 276
  • Locates Cracker among his biscuit soldiers before firing his final Green Star barrage. 327
  • Is still outclassed by Yasopp’s superior Haki, which allows Yasopp to predict and counter Usopp’s attacks with ease. 447

Armament Haki

Usopp has trained Armament Haki but struggles to control and maintain its power.

  • His Haki-enhanced shot against a sea beast weakened before reaching its intended effect. 242
  • Plans to combine Armament Haki with POP GREEN effects, including binding thorns, explosive pinecones, fireworks flowers, and leaf shuriken. 242
  • His limited Armament Haki is identified as a major area for further growth. 278

POP GREEN and War Grassland

Usopp uses special plant seeds from the Boeing Archipelago as ammunition and battlefield-control tools. 242

  • War Grassland fills an area with carnivorous plants, thorny vines, spiked bamboo, flying leaf shuriken, and Exploding Pinecones. 390
  • Uses explosive rounds, toxic mist, resin, pine needles, vines, and traps to exhaust and restrict opponents. 276 277
  • Defeated Izo through sustained bombardment, planted trap zones, explosions, and toxic mist. 277
  • The tactic is vulnerable to multiple enemies or opponents who can bypass its prepared terrain; Van Augur’s teleportation wastes many of its traps. 278 390

Improvisation and Invention

Usopp adapts his weapons and ammunition to the situation rather than relying on a single finishing move.

  • Made detachable stands for the crew’s Lamp Dials, allowing them to be charged on deck and used in the ship’s cabins. 111
  • Conducted weapons research using Skypiea shells. 105
  • Developed his dual revolvers with Franky’s help. 151
  • Uses specialized Seastone ammunition against Devil Fruit users. 361
