Background

Chopper was born with a blue nose and was ostracized by his reindeer herd. After accidentally eating a Devil Fruit, he became able to speak and take humanlike forms, but this only led humans to treat him as a monster as well; they drove him away with curses, blades, and gunfire. 37 38

Dr. Hiluluk accepted and saved Chopper when neither reindeer nor humans would. Following Hiluluk’s death, Chopper pursued his foster father’s dream by studying medicine under Dr. Kureha, hoping to become a doctor capable of curing every illness. His past rejection left him afraid of being hurt again and convinced that he was unfit to be a pirate. 37

On Drum Island, Chopper met Luffy, Reiner, and Zoro while Kureha treated Zoro’s injuries. Luffy and Reiner repeatedly invited him to sail with them, ultimately assuring him that “monsters” were welcome aboard their ship.
