Background / History

The Soul Refining Sect was established after its founding ancestor acquired the Soul Snatching Chain in a desolate netherworld. By comprehending the chain's incomplete Soul Path Innate law, the ancestor created the foundation of the Soul Refining Scripture and established the sect's lineage. No successor has fully refined the chain since the ancestor's death tens of thousands of years ago. 206

The sect is built across 108 peaks connected by a dense network of spirit veins and earth veins. Its original mountain-protecting formations were strong enough to suppress True Immortals, while the main peak housed a soul-suppressing and spirit-sealing formation specifically created to contain the Soul Snatching Chain. 205 206

Although it possessed numerous Immortal experts, the sect was initially considered a second-rate force in Earth Province because it lacked a Heavenly Immortal. Its position changed after Zhang Yu aided Zhou Wentao and Xia Hongjue in reaching the Heavenly Immortal realm and took control of the 108-peak formation network. 233 247

Recruitment and Sect Rules

The sect traditionally opens its gates once every ten years. Only 500 disciples are accepted per ceremony from tens of thousands of applicants, whose cultivation commonly begins at Great Grandmaster and includes many Feathered Realm candidates. 187

Inner-sect status is formally based on cultivation, survival experience, and service. Inner disciples are described as Heaven Ascension Realm cultivators who earned their positions through contributions to the sect; direct admission through personal connections was publicly rejected. 188

Soul Snatching Chain

The Soul Snatching Chain is the sect's greatest inherited artifact. It is ninety-nine feet long, dark in color, marked with blood-red vein-like patterns, and has a crimson crescent scythe at each end. It contains a wisp of incomplete Soul Path Innate law and immense malevolent energy. 206

Zhang Yu and Zhang Lingyun reached the Soul Refining Sect after traveling from the Eastern Sheng Kingdom. Zhang Lingyun could not admit Zhang Yu's Land Immortal protectors due to their unknown origins, instead ordering them to remain within a thousand li of the sect for the duration of their ten-year oath. 187

At the sect gates, Zhang Yu witnessed the competitive once-every-ten-years recruitment ceremony and the high cultivation threshold expected of applicants. 187

Crimson Flame Peak Conflict

Zhang Lingyun's claim to Crimson Flame Peak triggered a confrontation with Zhu Wuwang, who had occupied the peak during her thousand-year absence. Helian Jue ruled that both Zhu Wuwang's forcible occupation and Zhang Lingyun's dereliction of duty were at fault, while ordering Zhu to release the souls he had refined from Crimson Flame Peak disciples. 199

Threatened by Zhu Wuwang and Xing Tian, Zhang Yu began planning to seize control of the sect's formation network rather than remain dependent on others for protection. 192 205

Sword Sect Attack and Formation Crisis

Jiang Feng of the Sword Sect breached the sect's protective formation, defeated its combined force of over a dozen True Immortals and hundreds of Earthly Immortals, and forced the sect into near-despair. 208

The assault shattered the main peak's Soul Suppressing Great Formation, releasing the Soul Snatching Chain. The chain ravaged the sect without distinguishing allies from enemies, while the resulting battle devastated peaks, palaces, and disciples. 208 211

Five Sect Alliance Conflict

The Crimson Flame Sect, Cold Soul Gate, Heavenly Saber Gate, Ten Thousand Poisons Cult, and Ghost Spirit Gate attempted to force the Soul Refining Sect to share its method for creating Heavenly Immortals. Zhang Lingyun rejected their unequal “resource sharing” proposal. 235
