This, um... had I been kept behind after class?

Sobaek felt a little uneasy. Wasn't the thing every ordinary wage slave feared most being singled out by the boss after a meeting?

But then again, she was a lieutenant general, and so was I. We were both senior officers and members of His Highness Su's court. Who was afraid of whom? Before I made lieutenant general, I was afraid of everyone. If I still had to be afraid of everyone afterward, what was the point of becoming one?

Jaeger Sobaek thought this, but then he saw Selu across the table. Before leaving, the viscount's daughter had given him another meaningful look, but he genuinely hadn't understood a thing.

Soon, all that remained in the soundproof field's enclosed space was a thoroughly confused Sobaek and the female general a thousand light-years away (or rather, her projection). The latter was glaring at him with her striking heterochromatic eyes, her obvious displeasure plain to see.

Still, given Lieutenant General Rowenthor's temperament, if she wasn't being sarcastic and cutting, then she couldn't be all that angry.

The female general put on a stern face. "You're a good person, Jaeger. But sometimes, kindness isn't a virtue."

Sobaek lowered his head slightly. "I... I'm very sorry."

Rowenthor looked at her meekly deferential colleague, torn between laughter and exasperation. "Jaeger, why are you always so quick to admit you're wrong, or so eager to apologize? You're a strong man, too. Why are you so short on swagger?"

That was just the philosophy of life I'd learned as a kid from a small town. Those of us from humble backgrounds had gotten used to lowering our heads before we even started a conversation. A young lady from a great noble house like you wouldn't understand, would you?
