As for the amalgam monsters that appeared later, they were indeed much tougher. But after Sobek quickly took control of the central tower and, with help from the local engineers, activated the city's defense cannons, those monsters were no longer a threat.
Crystal City's defense cannons hadn't been used in decades, but the Empire's bureaucrats at every level had always been nearly strict in their oversight of national defense. Though some parts of the twelve dual-purpose surface-to-air cannons had grown old, they had still been carefully maintained and were ready to use at a moment's notice.
Colonel Sobek immediately tied the talismans Tantai Jing had given him to the shells, then used the railguns to bombard every amalgam monster that appeared in the city. He had to admit, this wildly unconventional tactic worked astonishingly well. After only two or three rounds of firing, all of Crystal City had returned to peace.
Crystal City was also the first area to be completely restored to peace after this upheaval.
Of course, more than a thousand ordinary citizens had been killed or injured, and quite a few had even been accidentally hit during the bombardment. But since none of them were nobles, the losses were bearable.
